RIFT PAYE tax refund

Options
Hi,

has anyone used the rift tax refund agency? rift.co.uk

I know people who have used it years back but my first thought is that they took quite a large percentage.
If anyone has used or could recommend a similar company it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Stuart

The standard advice on MSE is to do it yourself: it is easy.

If you are happy to lose 40% or so and would rather not spend any time sorting your affairs out then that is fine, but not if you are led to believe that using an agency is the only way to get a refund.

Unfortunately as far as tax is concerned I don't have a clue where to start or what forms to fill.
I'm pretty sure I can claim for using my car travelling to various different work sites and washing my work uniform but not sure on how to actually claim for this.

Any help, pointers or links would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Stuart

It needs a few bits from you first?

You've clarified it's PAYE ..... so why do you consider a refund is due? Which year(s)? P45 / P60 figures etc ....... will help someone help you? And we are 40% cheaper!

From what I can gather, and also from people have previously spoken with, I can claim back travel (mileage I think) to and from a non permanent place of work if using my own vehicle for up to the last 6 years.
The people I have previously spoken with have used this company and this is what they were entitled to claim for therefore I also think that I would be successful in claiming.........If I can find out how?????

The percentage this company charges seems quite high so if I can get the correct forms to fill out I would definitely do it myself.

If the travel is to a 'temporary workplace' .... you can claim for up to 6 years. Unless you've previously filled in SA Returns, when the timeframe shortens.

There's fairly full details on the HMRC site here :

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/relief-travel.htm

........ you'll need to expand and read the links towards the bottonm of the page to get the overall picture. If you've solely been PAYE ........... watch that the tax year to Apr 05 ceases to be claimable at the end of this month.

    Come back if further questions?

It is always a good idea to understand how these things work: tax is complicated but we really need to get to grips with it.

Employees, who are taxed under PAYE, are normally given everything they need to do their jobs. They are expected to cover their travel costs, meals and office clothes from their salary. If they are out of pocket from the job, for example as a result of being sent on a course, they are usually reimbursed by their employer on production of a receipt - for air fares and meals etc. This is company policy and does not involve HMRC.

If an employee does have business-related expenses that the employer will not pay, then sometimes they can be tax deductible. HMRC recognises business mileage or fuel; professional fees and subscriptions; tools and specialist clothing (including cleaning); capital allowances and travel and subsistence costs. These must be wholly, necessarily and exclusively for work purposes. HMRC also permit household expenses for employees who are required to work at home.
