Seriously dont use them, ring HMRC and let them help you to do it for yourself.

so what your saying is i can claim for my tools and work wear? aswell as food i have brought whilst working away from home?

Lunch as against supper is very iff'y, as we all have to eat to live.

As a PAYE person you are in a master and servant relationship with your employer.
Good masters are expected to look after their servants if they expect them to do things beyond the normal call of duty - eg staying overnight to get a job done.
A good master would reimburse such expenses tax free - if he does not then the tax man is prepared to recognise this additional unexpected expense was incurred wholly in pursuit of earning a living.

    You will need receipts.

Don't really agree, not in the sense that I recommend this company but it's a waste of time ringing HMR&C unless you know pretty much exactly what you are claiming for.

Claiming for tools and equipment is pretty easy but if you are claiming for mileage you need to get a pretty accurate figure for the mileage you've done- it also takes HMR&C ages to deal with these - but an agency can't make them do it any quicker.
  • Well as an accountancy firm I charge £150 for a standard CIS Tax Self Assesment so a fair bit cheaper!
  • I've used Rift for quite a few years now and had no problems at all. Always been pleased with the service and you get your refund as soon as they get it from the revenue, no hanging about! They charge 28% but there are no hidden extras, unlike a couple of other companies I looked at, who looked cheaper but had loads of extras hidden in the small print. One of the things I like about Rift is that it gets easier each year to claim, you get a reminder, handy log book etc. Having given up trying to get any sense out of the revenue, I'll stick with rift. Try them and make your own mind up.

    Hi

My husband used puretaxationservices ltd and they charged him a fixed fee of £110 + vat! rather than the 28% plus vat we had quotes from, from other companies

28% is a complete rip-off and bears no relation to the work done to achieve the repayment. If you are owed £12000 or £1200, having the same complexity, why should one incur ten times the fee of the other? Cannot believe the recommendations on here.

    Hi,

has anyone used the rift tax refund agency? rift.co.uk

I know people who have used it years back but my first thought is that they took quite a large percentage.
If anyone has used or could recommend a similar company it would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Stuart

be aware HMRC are receiving large numbers of claims from this company asking to reduce the expenses to be claimed in the forthcoming year. This has a knock-on effect, the taxpayer does not receive the tax relief at source and at the right time, and at the end of the year, RIFT then submit a claim for expenses again and keep whatever % they are claiming.

If tax relief is given at source (by increasing the tax code) RIFT do not see any part of that income.

Anyone that has used this company be aware that one you sign authorisation for a company to act on your behalf, they retain that authority until either you or them cancel it with HMRC

RickyB and Brendan O Malley, you both have one post, within 3 days of each other, you both joined in February 2011, and you both are claiming to have used rift for a number of years.

    Try free advertising elsewhere.

Some of the comments on here are clearly from people who work at RIFT - BrendanOMalley and RickyB.

Yes I have heard of RIFT tax refund agency riftuk.com I have been using them for the past ten years after knocking my head against the wall trying to do it myself. Have you ever tried to phone the tax office and asked them to explain your entitlements under the Mileage allowance Relief rules(PAYE). I have had over 12000 pounds refunded in the last 10 years as a paye construction worker, yes thats into my pocket the rift fee was around 28% and not the 40% mention earlier which seems standard for most other agencies. I would certainly recommend Rift as they take the pain out of it and once you are registered with them it makes your additional claims easier. I have recently changed to CIS like many other builders and RIFT are now doing my CIS Tax returns for a fee of £175 pounds plus vat(for standard) that beats any other comparable fee as far as i Know

    regards

If there were awards for posts that clearly were written by employee's of, or in order to advertise a service, then this would surely be the winner.

How many groundworkers do you know who know the phrase 'Mileage Allowance Relief Rules (PAYE)'?

    :spam:

RIFT, along with many other tax back companies. Most of which have the same address, are nothing other than con men, and could possibly be acting fraudulently with regards to their latest scam, reducing, or trying to remove job expenses from a tax code when clearly the expenses still exist and the resulting relief should be given throughout the year.

I'm sure that this will be being done WITHOUT the clients consent, and thankfully HMRC now seem to dealing with this matter.

How low do you have to stoop to ensure repeat business.

I would advise everyone who is a client of RIFT, or any other unscrupulous tax back company, to contact HMRC and remove their authority to deal with your records.

Claiming tax back is easy, it can be done by anyone. This company is potentially changing your tax code for THEIR benefit.

YOU are losing YOUR tax relief, YOUR money, because of the dirty tricks being used by this company.
