Savings and income support

When I spilt from my husband due to domestic abuse, myself and kids lost all we had and our home to get away. I got re-homed and through tthe courts over nearly 2 years was awarded the monies from house sale, approx £15000. I informed income support and they accepted I had to use most of the money to buy things for the kids and myself we had nothing hardly and I saved £7000. My income support was reduced and I had to use the £7000 over the last 6 months to pay to live and debts (my ex left me in debt) and bills. I re-claimed for full income support end of November but am having trouble, they want reciepts I was taking £100 one week and maybe more another to buy food pay bills etc and dont have reciepts. I am struggling to get by now and they want receipts I dont have. What can I do. I filled in a form stating this to them today.

  • Just to add they claimed I had £11,000 savings not the £7,000 as I had no reciepts for the other £4,000, so my benefit was reduced more.
  • its a difficult one but if they stand by their decision you should appeal, maybe DM will take a different view, maybe get help from welfare rights?

The onus is on you to show that you no longer have the money and that it wasnt spent extravagantly. If you cannot do that they are right to assume that you still have the money.

They should allow you 'living costs' though so ask them for a review of the claim as its usually safe for them to assume that the capital is depreciating.
  • I have shown my bank statements and the savings book and it shows small amounts coming out here and there weekly to pay bills and living costs. thanks for replys i was upset today about it all.

Have you got any money coming out on the statements showing as payments direct to the company you are paying? Surely they could tot up any amounts that show ''tesco £30'' that would be obviously paying for supermarket goods (not enough to be a widescreen tv or a computer/anything ott) which might knock it down somewhat?

If you paid bills is there any way of ''getting'' previous payments statements from the company? E.g. if you paid for electricity in cash can the electricity company not produce a statement/list to show all your ''top ups'' or payments for the previous however long to evidence what you are saying?

There must be cash amounts you could never prove as you do not have receipts for all things bought from £100 withdrawn at an atm, but just getting a bit of it proven would help you along?

Maybe I am thinking things that are not possible but it must be worth looking into so you can get as much of your entitlement as you can?

Best of luck anyway, you sound like you have had a hard time of it and this extra stress cannot be helping!

What time scale are we talking about?

Have you got nothing left now, or have you got it down to £3k?

When you divide the amount by the number of weeks, how much have you used per week to live on?
  • Hi I have £10 left and I dont have a debit card to my savings account. Its £7000 over about 8 months I worked out and every week like £50 went out one day and maybe £100 a few days later. But in August I had to use over £300 extra to buy I have 3 older sons 14, 12, 10, school uniforms that was expensive. I dont think I spent excessively as normal we just have enough food to survive and we actually didnt have to struggle to feed ousrselves for a few months.
  • I have been looking at getting a job to help, but have struggled there is no child care here, a small town, I dont drive and have no family close, so its hard to do that. Thanks for all your help and yes it is stressfull. I did use some the money to get kids christmas presents back In November.

Roughly £875 a month then. I do think this is excessive and am not surprised that the DWP are asking for evidence.
  • I dont have any evidence so I guess I will have to loose my income support. Will it be for good i loose it ?
