Hi,

just looking for some input. My y reg saab has gone into garage today, broken. The garage have just contacted me to say that the gearbox has collapsed?? need a new one for the fine sum of £1500. The car is probably not even worth that, we only bought it 6 months ago. I have no experience of cars and probs just wondering if this is a reasonable price for this job??

Would appreciate any input
thanks.

That price seems very low for a new gear box. I would challenge them on that one and what do they mean by 'collapsing'? Not a term I have come across.

May be worth sourcing a secondhand one if it needs replacing - and generally a good idea to replace the clutch assembly at the same time. It won't be a cheap job.

    Hi,

its a manual gearbox. the mechanics words were it had collapsed and needs a full reconditioned one?? will take 5 days as the gearbox is sent away?

The symptoms were the car wouldnt go into gear (mainly first i think?). when aa man was putting it on ramp it would barely move and there was a grinding noise from underneath.

    Hi trixxi,
I think it would need thinking about !
Jeannie has the best idea and try to get a s/h box and fit a new clutch because it would be daft not to do it.
Problems are finding a decent box and getting it done cheap ...not easy even using s/h box its going to cost a fair bit probably £500 upwards so depends what value you put on a Y reg Saab ???????

what they mean by collapsing is main gearbox shaft bearings have collapsed, for the ladies its the bit that holds up the rest:D:D:Dand yes its a fair quote but you can get a reconditioned box for half that

Trixxi said that the quote was for a recon box - expect the labour was included - but possibly not a new clutch assembly.

And don't be patronising towards us ladies please............ :D
