Trixxi it might be worth getting a quote from a specialist if you google clutch gearbox specialist and your area and give a couple a ring they might give you a reasonable quote ???
They are quite often cheaper than the average garage because they have negotiated better prices etc etcIt's not just about the money0 -
There are loads of places offering reconditioned gearboxes. £1500 seems a bit high to me.
Depending on the details I'd consider a straight swap rather than a reconditioned one.Happy chappy0 -

Or a straight swap with a recon one...Genie

this happened to me a year ago (plus other bits and bobs neeeded doing) so I had my car scrapped as it was a high mileage car and worth less than the cost of repair. bit depressing when I only got £100 for it from the scrap people.

get yourself down the local scrap yards, you should be able to source one yourself and then get the garage to fit it. My dad had a similar problem with his Renault and saved loads.0

The mileage is 110922 miles, so pretty high!!

If you wish to try and source a secondhand gear box - you can google and try breaker link, only need to put car details in just the once and they get sent out breakers nationally.
Or google for recon boxes.
It is a lot of hassle - but I don't know what else to suggest. We have no objection if customers supply their own parts - but obviously, we won't guarantee them. One of the reasons why I asked if your current garage will guarantee parts & labour etc. Sometimes its not worth the 'faffing' around if you have a decent guarantee of work - in writing of course!Genie
