Best Budget Gaming PC Help needed.

We are looking to build my 14 year old son a computer primarily for gaming and internet. We would love some help on getting one for around £500. We are going to build it ourselves rather than getting a ready made one, although would consider that option as well. (hubbie has done this before!) Just need a little help on whats out there that would be useful, from case to operating system. Any help appreciated.

Hi, do you intend to have this future proofed for gaming? Currently most games out there are dx 9 compatible, however this is most likely going to change to dx 10 in the not to distant future. Dx 10 games will require windows vista to run, the operating system is then going to have a big say in the pc components. Vista is a resource hungry operating system, running it with any less than 3gb of ram wouldn't be recommended. Some games can use up to 1gb of ram alone.
What type of games are likely to be played? some graphic intensive type games will need middle to top of range graphics cards, these alone can be quite expensive. Avoid going down the SLI (2 gfx cards linked) route, this is only for very high end gaming and most pc's will run into a bottleneck with another part of the system.
Intel cpu's are generally outperforming amd's though i would expect amd to bounce back, am currently thinking on my next build which will probably be quad core amd. Amd have historically been the gamers choice as a cpu due to better performance for a lot less costs.

  • you could get a copy of vista relatively cheap through one of the student programs. here's 2 mins of pc building, not keen on the motherboard myself, rather spend around £70-80, but under budget, and capable of playing all todays games (direct x 9 and 10)

I'd get him a Playstation 3 for gaming and a really cheap PC or NetBook.
  • Looking to run Dx 10 games (crisis etc)and yes on Vista. Otherwise not too sure of what else.
Apparently we have the graphics card Nvidia Inno3D GeForce 9800. DH has been looking on www.puterz.co.uk has anyone any knowledge of them or can recommend another company.
Tony you mention getting Vista cheaply through a student programme do you have any details of this as my son is at Uni.

Marty he has a PS3 and tried to convince him of using this to play his games but he would prefer to have the PC as well. I dunno why as I don't play games myself so am at a loss to understand his reasoning!!

Because there are lots of games that are only available for the PC. If you want to play Company of Heroes or Medieval Total War for example then a PS3 is as much use as a toaster. A lot of people prefer FPS games on the PC as well even if they are available on the consoles.

That's not a bad little rig for the price.
  • dump the ati card from the budget build, stick in the 9800 (performance very similar) the pc will run crysis without any problems, in dx9 or 10.
Never used puterz.co.uk, so cannot comment
cheap vista software 4 students but it is the upgrade, so you'll need a valid xp disk (I think)

  • Hubby would prefer one which is Intel based if possible so if anyone has any suggestions for that would be great. He liked the acer one though so it could be a definate contender.
Sorry to be such a pain and thanks everyone for all the suggestions, very nice of you all to take the time to respond.

  • maybe my link didn't work, so updated the post with html link
the build contains an INTEL E5200 dual core processor, the tesco special is amd based, and, without looking, i guess it will have a pci-e gpu, or slot, so you can use the better 9800 gpu
