If it is intel based then the Q6600 chip is best bang for your buck .
It will need to be the SLACR chip the one with GO stepping.
    This can be overclocked,
Fit a good CPUcooler I went for a zalman aero flower..plus arctic silver thermal paste
Go for something like an Asus P5E motherboard
Ram is So cheap now So I would put 4Gb in. OCZ or Crucial
The samsung spinpoint hard drives are cheap and fast 750 or 1 TB.
The antec 900 case runs very cool and is easy to build in.
The power supply will need to be good...You need to hope scan or ebyer do a special offer.
Graphics card .I would go for one of the good older generation I have a zotac 9800 GT.which is pretty good and fairly cheap.
Get a sata dvd writer . really cheap on play.com
This is the machine I recently built for my daughter ...I have to build one for my son now ..It is extremly fast and quiet and runs very cool 29 to 34 degrees C.

    EDIT*
this is for the box and it assumes you already have keyboard ,mouse and monitor and operating system ...So maybe no Good .
  • globalds, the OP has stated they have a 9800 card (not sure which model). That looks a nice build, complete with monitor etc..did it come under the OPs £500 budget? ;)

That's not a bad little rig for the price.
courtesy of hotukdeals there is also a voucher to discount apparently

Use £13.00 off voucher XXC7NM for this price. There's also 3% cashback through quico

Please note the one i proposed is a QUAD core.

as far as i remember only came in agp format which is now dead and wouldn't be any better than the shipped 8500

It's an Nvidia 9800, not the aged ATI Radeon 9800..
  • Wow thanks again guys hubby has a lot to look at when he comes home. I have been giving him periodic updates by phone of all your replies. He said to say that we do not have the operating system and would need to buy Vista Home Premium hopefully cheaply!!!
