Can somebody please tell me how to look after cactus or should I say cacti? My son has bought his girlfriend some and she wants to know what she should or should not do.

Personally when I had lots of cacti I never watered them once a week in summer more like once every 2 weeks.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
Neglect it! LOL My DH has a cactus that is 15 years old and gets watered once every 4 months when he gets home on leave. It is 3 foot tall now and I hate it:rotfl:0

Don't feed them! Water them fairly regularly when it is hot but ensure they are kept very dry over the winter/colder months as the roots will rot out.
Only water from the base, avoid splashing the cacti itself as this can also cause rot. If you need to repot them dont use normal compost but rather use a sandy/gritty medium which is easier to wet when it has dried out and also contains fewer nutrients.
If you are keeping them in a greenhouse, most cacti are pretty frost hardy as long as the roots are dry.
Good luck - some have beautiful flowers but you generally have to wait a few years before they appear. All I seem to hear is blah blah blah!0 -
It depends what type of Cacti you have if they are the prickly ball types then watering 1-2 times a week from May to August, then once a fortnight or less depending on how hot the spot where you have them is.
For Christmas / Easter Cacti, the ones with all the flowers normally sold around these times, then it is important to keep the soil just damp when out of flower, and water 2-3 times a week in hot weather, adding baby bio or a weak tomato fertiliser. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
I stick mine outside in the summer, gives them a breath of air & they seem to thrive OK on rain from the skyWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0

I'm in mourning, my old cactus(40 years old) has at last succumbed. As its 12ft high I could not move it to another greenhouse and the -14's we got were just too much for it. I don't think I'll replace it as I'll not see another get the same age.
Oh well.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
40 years! That's a good age 0 -
Yep and it only flowered (at midnight) about 5 years ago. Took photo's at 2am as they are dead next morning.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
