just moving into a new house where the previous owner had a water meter fitted, we cannot get it removed so need to find ways to save ( legally ) ie: not plumbing into next doors supply, we have decided to use water butts and filters and by collecting rain water can expect to collect enough for the garden, loo and washing machine. this will save about £120 pa but will cost approx £1200 to buy + installation, does anybody know of any grants available to help with the setup costs.

You can insist on having the meter removed, just tell them you want to go on assessed charge, and are going to refuse to pay any bills they issue. They are more likely to cave in rather than go to court and by law they cannot cut you off. I did this with SWW and the dispute was settled in five days.

If you use rainwater harvesting they will still charge you a percentage for sewerage, so you won't gain much there and you are right water butts take ages to pay for themselves.

You cannot insist on having a water meter removed.

You also cannot go onto an assessed charge if it is possible to fit a meter.

An assessed charge is only offered to a customer who applies to have a water meter fitted and the water company cannot fit a meter for any reason - often shared water mains or expense of fitting a meter.

I don't know the reason for your 'dispute', but when a meter is fitted you cannot simply elect for an assessed charge. Otherwise most of us would elect for an assessed charge and have no restriction on water usage.
