Those front window tints don't look legal to me.

Screams chav car which means run on a budget, no servicing and cheap nasty tyres.

Continentals on the back, Nexen N800 on the front - midrange price but I've had them on a few cars including my 330Ci, and they're very good indeed IMO.

I agree - the side window tints look illegal IMHO.

The polizei in my area would pull you up in no time at all - and rightly so.

I am thinking of buying a second hand luxury car. A BMW 730. I saw it on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142378083143
I don't know much about older cars, so I am unsure.
I am open to suggestions as to whether I should go for it or stay away.

Potential big bills, and complex to work at if / when something goes wrong. Also, more likely to require a "specialist" to work at it rather than say your average mechanic looking at a 1.6 Focus.

You could drive it a year and it might cost you £0 in maintenance or it might cost you £3,000. Its a roll of the dice.

Its a £3,495 14 year old car with £60K car running costs....

So you didn't just 'see it on ebay' then

    I smell pork luncheon meat.

I will buy it but for a bit less. If he can sell it for the asking price, he will.
He would normally be my go to guy with regards to cars and motors. But I am seeking independent advice as he would probably be biased on the BMW.

I have driven it many times. It belongs to a friend of mine. The attraction is that I have always had small cars, and I may soon get a job where I could be travelling 30 to 70 miles a day, and it looks and feel comfortable.

    You don't need a 7 series if you're only doing 30 to 70 miles a day.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

OP never said he needs a 7 series.

I would rather do those miles in a 7 series than most other cars if I could justify the running costs.

I really like the alloys on that car, shame about the side windows lowering the tone.

If you are prepared take the gamble of being able to scrap it very quickly if there's a daft repaurbill/finding the money to pay said repair bill, go for it. As already mentioned luxury cars can cost luxury money to run, but you may be lucky. One of my big motoring regrets was turning down one of the last Jag SK8's from 1996 going for a song from a friends father. I assumed that at 13 years old as it was then the bills would bite very soon. Another friend took the chance and had 6 years of trouble free reliable motoring in it save for the usual MOT/annual service/tyres. You pays your money and makes your choice...

Put another £3500 in the bank to cover the first Small to Medium bill. Then set up a direct Debit of £300 per month to cover the second small Medium bill. Hopefully you will be able to afford to run it.

If you cannot do the above then walk away. Personally I would want something more interesting looking / driving for the risk.

Problem is people who want a 14 year old luxury car at 3.5k generally can't afford the average bills that come up.

I looked at a 11k Boxter was very close o pulling the trigger till my uncle showed me the astronomical prices for services / brakes / clutches etc.

You could buy it and run it for 2 years with no issues or you could get it and it need 2k of work in 5 months.

    Roll of the dice basically
