Buying a second hand luxury car

I would rather do those miles in a 7 series than most other cars if I could justify the running costs.
So a 5 series or even 3 series wouldn't be suitable??If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
They would be fine if he wanted to look like a sales rep.lincroft1710 wrote: »So a 5 series or even 3 series wouldn't be suitable??"We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -

I think you may have insulted a lot of 3 and 5 series owners! If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
It's not me selling. I am at a point where I fancy something big. My original short list was:
Jag XF
Mercedes-Benz S500
BMW
VW Phaeton
I have been advised to stay well away from Mercedes-Benz.
So the choice is narrowed down to 3. The BMW has come up, and he needs to sell as he will be getting a motor from Motability. But I understand the issues with big badge, big bills. I will wait a month or so and then, maybe I will go for it. The car has been remapped so it can do 45mpg, which I believe is not bad
Phaeton! They're absolutely worthless, cheap as chips, they're amazingly luxurious, and they have a freaking W12 engine.
Also I don't believe for a second that a 2003 7 series that weights approx. 8 tonnes does 45mpg.0 -

There are far more luxuries in a 7 series than either of the other two, just as there are more luxuries in an S class Mercedes than a C class. They tend to feed down the line. So you can buy an older 7 series that has features in it that don't enter a 3 series until 2 years later and on a higher trim level. A 730i SE will have more features than a 325i SE.0 -

I did think about a 3 or 5 series, bit this 7 series has absolutely all the toys you may want.0

I had a couple of Toyotas - nice cars - but they cannot pretend to be luxury cars - even with a Lexus badge stuck on.
What utter tosh! That old chestnut "it's really a Toyota" seems to be the favourite refrain of many who could never afford a Lexus and have certainly never driven one.
I worked my way up from LS 400 to LS 430 to LS 460 and wish I could justify a new LS 600. On the downside, depreciation is not for the faint-hearted; the last one I paid £64k and now would probably be lucky to get £10k for it. On the upside it's never let me down (in complete contrast to the brand new Range Rover which turned out to be the worst and most unreliable car I've ever owned.)
A 10 year old LS 460 has a 4.6L V8 that will surprise you with how quiet it is at low speed and amaze you when you put your foot down and the sheer power pushes you back into you seat; this is a two ton car that accelerates and handles like a sports car. A 10 year old car that has:
- heated and cooling armchair seats,
- double glazing,
- fridge in the back,
- 4 zone A/C,
- 4 electric seats,
- auto-cruise-control (brakes, accelerates and steers automatically [and you thought self-driving cars was something new!
]),
- a pre-crash-system that prepares the car when it determines an accident is likely to happen,
- all round parking sensors,
- reversing camera,
- self-parking,
- voice control [you thought Amazon's Alexa was something new?],
- self-closing doors,
- smart key unlock and lock,
- electronic suspension height adjust,
- auto-wipers,
- powered open and close boot,
- 19 speaker sound system
- and the only optional extra available... a heated steering wheel! :rotfl:
Are you seriously suggesting that is not a luxury car? :cool:Every generation blames the one before...

There is an awful lot of work listed as having been done on the car, and bills are available to see. Have a look at the size of them, then decide if you want and can afford to take the risk.0

No it's not tosh.
You are missing the point I was/am making.
No way is it a luxury car - all those bells and whistles don't change a thing.
A Toyota can never be a luxury car - not even if you gold-plate the door handles and have a fur dashboard.
It can have several luxury features though.
Neither can a Ford or a Volkswagen be classed a luxury car.
And price has zilch to do with it either.
So jog on my friend and enjoy your 'luxury' car - if you're happy why should I care.
