No compensation for cancelled US flights to Europe?ne

OH has been in Memphis. Last night flew to Charlotte to catch connecting flight to London. All flights confirmed. Arrived on time in Charlotte. After waiting 1.5 hours were told that pilot had phoned in sick and airline had been unable to find a replacement. Flight cancelled. Would have to wait and book onto next flight in 24 hours time.

OH has Staysure insurance but it only seems to cover compensation for a disrupted holiday eg travel and other transport costs, caused by strikes, air traffic malfunction, mechanical failure. Everything else is presumably covered for EU countries and carriers by EU legislation.

But US has no similar protection. If you are flying out of a US airport on a US plane, and it is cancelled by the airline, for whatever reason, it is not covered by UK insurance and you are at the mercy of the US airline what happens. OH got rebooked on next flight 24 hours later but had a couple of jobs (self employed), planned for Monday afternoon and evening which now has to cancel or try to find a late stand-in, and to do this from the US.

If you are a UK resident, returning to UK from US or outside EU, on a non EU flight which is delayed or cancelled, is there any way to insure against its cancellation or delay?

Yes: read your travel insurance carefully before buying it.This kind of risk is covered by some policies but not others.

And had the flights back been on any EU carrier then EU compensation would have been payable: surely that is something to bear in mind when booking.
