Having spoken to the sales person in the closest branch (still 100 miles away) they want a £200 'delivery charge' which will be deducted from the purchase price.

He also said I would be able to get a refund if I don't take the car for any reason but also at times made reference to refund if 'not as described' or not 'fit for purpose'. Apparently, me not wanting the car would mean it was not fit for my purpose!

We've left it at me asking him to send me something in writing explaining when and in what circumstances I could get the money back. Car can't be delivered until middle of next week so I'm going to call at the start of the week to get things sorted hopefully.

To me it sounds like it's going to be a deposit with a refund only if the car is rejected for not as described etc.

Hmm, I had this situation a few years back for a Ford Focus we wanted to view (a low mileage auto with sunroof so rare-ish). Ford main dealer said the car I was interested in was at a different branch and asked £100 to bring it over to the local branch. I was assured over the phone that this would be refunded if we chose not to buy - and of course deducted from price if we bought.
I gave them my credit card no, they charged my card immediately and we went to view 2 days later.
Having seen this rather sad, knocked about car which had very worn tyres and a cheap aftermarket sunroof fitted (I admit I had assumed it was a factory-fitted when I saw the ad) we decided that this car wasn't for us, and I asked for my deposit to be refunded as the car wasn't what I had expected. The salesman refused as it was as he had described it, not his fault that I didn't know what I wanted. He was very brusque and unpleasant.

I asked my husband to get back into our car, and I followed the salesman back into the showroom - which was pretty busy on this Saturday morning. I had to get quite assertive, and loudly ask to see the sales manager (and use the words shoddy practice in a loud voice) before it was agreed that my deposit would be refunded. It took a week (and 2 phone calls) for that transaction to go through.

Obviously I've never been back to that dealership again, and I've vowed never to pay a deposit to view again.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Its not evans halshaw "move me closer" service is it?

http://www.evanshalshaw.com/move-me-closer/ (terms and conditions link at the bottom of that page too).

If it is, they have 10 working days to move the car. From the time they notify you the car has arrived, you have 2 working days to view the car. That seems a little one sided/unfair to me.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

I realise this might not be the case here but there is a common scam where someone hacks a main dealership auto trader account and switches the contact details. They then put an advert on for a popular slightly cheap car. When you contact them they ask for a deposit to bring the car to you.

I thought it was a scam and when I googled the wording from the email it was a recognised scam. I notified the dealer that had been hacked, auto trader and the person whose advert they copied. I didn’t get a response from any of them.

I then blocked the scammer's emails.

I've seen this before too, it's treated as if you're wanting to move it from dealership to dealership, though sadly they wouldn't let me see it in the storage yard. By the time you're paying the deposit you're almost committing to buy it unless there's something wrong, rather than just having a look.

If it's a car you like and you're serious about buying it, give it a go. They should be able to give you a video walk round at least before you decide to get it transferred.
Also get in writing what the conditions are on the refund of the deposit.

Thanks all. I've found a similar car about the same distance away so I'm going to view that tomorrow and at least test drive so that I know whether I'll be interested. If I don't buy the car tomorrow, but I test drive and know that I'm happy with the drive, I'll pay the deposit once I have terms for repayment.

It's not Evans Halshaw but, upon further research, it is a chain which stores cars remotely and transfers them to the showroom of choice, hence the fee. Apparently!

Unless it's a very rare, specialist vehicle then I can't see how anyone would agree to this. Crazy.
I'd much rather pay for a train journey and a taxi to go see a car than pay them a questionable 'deposit'

    Hi everyone,

Just popping in as we were mentioned!

As unholyangel mentioned, Evans Halshaw offer a "Move Me Closer" service whereby if you find a vehicle you like, but can't get to the dealership, we'll move the vehicle to a dealership that's closer to you.

This takes up to 10 working days, and we'll ask you to pay a £200 deposit. If you buy the car, we'll take the £200 off the sale price. If you view the car and decide not to buy it, we'll refund your £200 within 5 working days. The only circumstance in which you would not be entitled to get the £200 back would be if you move a car and then don't attend (or re-arrange and attend) the appointment we make for you to view it.

I hope that makes sense! You can read the full terms here. I'm around if anyone has any questions too :)

    This is quite silly:
    7. When the Vehicle arrives at the Chosen Evans Halshaw Dealership, the Customer will be notified by their contact preference. At that time the Customer must make an appointment not more than two Working Days (or such other time as may be agreed in writing by Evans Halshaw) from that notification to attend the Chosen Evans Halshaw Dealership to view the Vehicle.

A lot of people wouldn't be able to come in if they are working for the next two days.

    Hi Stator,

The term also provides for us to agree a more suitable time for a customer to view the car outside of those 2 working days, and we're always happy to do that! We're much more interested in showing you the car, with the hope that it's right for you, than we are in recovering costs for transporting that car.

So why do you have such a one-sided agreement? Why do you state 2 working days and not, say, 7 calendar days?
