Couple of extra suggestions:
SpamPal - www.spampal.org - brilliant free anti-spam software (I would recommend the Beta version 1.72v at the moment. This has the advantage of working in 'transparent' mode and so is very simple to install).
AbiWord - www.abiword.com - free word processing program similar to Microsoft Word (for anyone who doesn't want a full office suite).
Finally, ieSpell - www.iespell.com - very handy spell checker for use, for example, with contributions to discussion groups like this!0 -

Over 8.2 million downloads!
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!0 -

Great thread! :T
Not quite open source but free versions of commercial programs....
http://free grisoft.com - AVG antivirus software, has really come into its own lately and I have actually elected to install it instead of the paid for but resource hungry Norton. Mentioned above but it can be quite difficult to find the free version without the 'free' bit in the address.
Likewise with.....

Hello everyone,
I never even knew about this free software and I would be grateful if anyone could recommend any software that resembles Publisher as I do business flyers and faxes etc. My partner has publisher on his computer and says it is brilliant but it would mean me paying £90!
Thanks for all the info so far
PS as you can probably tell I am quite new to all this! :T0 -

Personally I've never been convinced that Publisher can do anything that Word (or any good word processor) can't do.
However, if you want a good free DTP programme, have a look at PagePlus at www.freeserifsoftware.com
PS Just spotted that the full version of PagePlus 7 is available on this month's (November!) Personal Computer World cover CD/DVD.0 -

Thought I'd mention that Open Office can export ("Save As") PDF documents.
I am a huge fan of Open Source software so this post could get a bit muddled, but hopefully some of the information here will be useful...
Article: How to run a PC without Microsoft Apps [ http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=9316 ]
Software for the Home User:
"Mr Bass" has some really useful free stuff ranging from DVD related software to free games, ring tone creation software and tips, and more. [ http://www.mrbass.org/ ]
See also this link: [ http://www.jairlie.com/oss/suggestedapplications.html ]
which is a pretty comprehensive list of Open Source software for a Windows environment.
Linux:
My favourite home Linux distribution is Mepis. You can download what is called an "ISO" which will burn onto a single CD-ROM. The operating system will run straight off the CD ROM without touching your hard disk(s) - albeit a little slowly as it runs in memory and uses compression. If you like it, it is easy to install.
There is a very lively and helpful community around this (as with most Linux distributions) and even a book (which you have to pay for, but which comes with Mepis and is written in a kind of "for dummies" style

The book on Amazon: [ http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0131488724/026-9232585-4966063 ]
The CD comes with LOADS of sotware including:
- Open Office (as discussed)
- Digikam (digital photo organisation software)
- GIMP (advanced Photo Shop)
- Firefox (the best web browser in my opinion)
- Thunderbird (email)
- Skype (web telephony)
- K3B (Nero style CD/DVD software)
- and much much more
Business Stuff for Linux:
"Mr Project" - Linux "MS Project" equivalent [ http://mrproject.codefactory.se/ ]
"Kontact" - Linux "Microsoft Outlook" equivalent [ http://www.kontact.org/ ]
"GRAMPS" - Linux Genealogy software [ http://gramps-project.org/ ]
"MySQL" - Linux (and windows) database [ http://www.mysql.com/ ]
"Dia" - Linux version of MS Visio (technical drawing software) [ http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/ ]
"GNUCash" - Linux MS Money style software [ http://www.gnucash.org/ ]
Music for Linux:
My favourite linux music(Itunes-like) software is called "Amarok" [ http://amarok.kde.org/ ]
Alternatives include XMMS (like WinAmp) [ http://www.xmms.org/ ]
and Juk (also similar to Itunes) [ http://developer.kde.org/~wheeler/juk.html ]
Windows:
My favourite windows music software is "ITunes" which is free, as in you don't pay anything for it.
Compression (like WinZip) - "7-Zip" [ http://www.7-zip.org/ ]
MailTraq - For Home users this software is free, its a Microsoft Exchange alternative so you can set up and share calendars, email, etc... its a bit "OTT" for most people but I used this for a while and it has some great features including LDAP. You can only have 4 users on the "free" version, however. [ http://www.mailtraq.com/323/form.nc ]
Hope you find this useful...
