Without knowing what these "largish" plants are, it's generally the compost which attracts flies to lay eggs. It won't be the plant itself.
Getting rid of the plants was rather extreme since the flies would have been just as easily disposed of and they have a very limited life span in any case.

They're usually fungus gnats, they pop up when the surface is wet, burrow in, lay eggs, more fungus gnats come to say hello. Cover the earth around the plant with some fine stone, vermicuite or similar. They'll go. Eventually.Shampoo? No thanks, I'll have real poo...0

Most likely the larvae were originally in the plant. Most likely the fly put them off and a few weeks later they were born
