I bought a couple of largish plants from ikea.
I noticed a sudden influx of small black flies, which I didn't connect with the plants until a friend suggested what might be causing it.
I got rid of both the plants, but what caused it.

Without knowing what these "largish" plants are, it's generally the compost which attracts flies to lay eggs. It won't be the plant itself.

Getting rid of the plants was rather extreme since the flies would have been just as easily disposed of and they have a very limited life span in any case.

I think you were just unlucky...

They're usually fungus gnats, they pop up when the surface is wet, burrow in, lay eggs, more fungus gnats come to say hello. Cover the earth around the plant with some fine stone, vermicuite or similar. They'll go. Eventually.

  • Most likely the larvae were originally in the plant. Most likely the fly put them off and a few weeks later they were born
