I bought a couple of gerbils and anything that needs shredding goes to them (good luck putting anything back together after they've had it for 10 minutes).

They also make good pets for my daughter.

Please do not put any printed/colored shredded paper in with small animals! Print and colored ink can upset their digestion if they chew it.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Bucket of hot water + paper + electric drill + paint or plaster stirrer

Soak paper in hot water for an hour then stir.

This is what I bought, 6 years ago and it still works perfectly. It is till the same now.

Whichever shredder you use, I advise after many 100's of sheets have gone through, take a clean sheet of paper and spread a SMALL amount of vegetable oil (NOT machine oil, engine oil or anything but vegetable oil, along the bottom of the paper, then feed it through. This lubricates the Rollers and cutters. DO NOT feed any paper with glue or adhesive through the shredder: it tangles up the rollers and cutters, which begin to slip.

If a fire isn't possible, think back to making papier mache when you were kid - tear up the paper, soak it for a few hours, mash then squeeze into lumps.
