I posed this question elsewhere not realising this section existed.
Can anybody recommend some small/cheaper energy suppliers where having a smart meter installed is not a compulsory part of the del?

Smart meters are not compulsory - that applies to all energy suppliers
There are a handful of specialised tariffs that expect you to have a smart meter (or apply to have one installed), but these are quite obvious.
So, consult a comparison site and find the best deal for you.
If you are still not sure, name the top three (supplier & tariff), and someone will tell you which of these, if any, expect you to have a smart meter0
