Do UK dollar accounts allow dollar cash withdrawals? I would be surprised: I suspect that the funds are first converted into sterling, then the sterling is used to buy dollars.

If I'm reading this correctly then Barclays allows direct withdrawal of many currencies from accounts held in that currency:
Currency cash withdrawals – by popping into your local
Barclays branch in the UK. Euro and US dollars may be
available on the day of ordering, but other currencies may
need ordering in advance and Charges apply for these
services. For more information, please refer to Our Bank
Charges Explained section. You can only directly
withdraw the following currencies from a currency
    current account:
    – Australian Dollars
    – Canadian Dollars
    – Danish Kroner
    – Euros
    – Hong Kong Dollars
    – Japanese Yen
    – New Zealand Dollars
    – Norwegian Kroner
    – South African Rand
    – Swedish Kroner
    – Swiss Francs
    – US Dollars

Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Some airports have ATM’s that will give you cash in other currencies but you are going to pay high fees. I highly recommend Revolut and just google them. They have saved me a fortune in money transfer fees. I too have a USD account in USA but if I need to pay someone in USD I just get them to open a Revolut account too ! You can have heaps of accounts (with real Bank account details like sort code and IBAN and manage it all from a smartphone app. You also get a credit card for free until 31/12/18. All banks and companies like Currencies Direct will be seriously affected by Revolut. This is the future of banking and I have had fabulous experience so far.

I would follow up the suggestion of a US bank in London having a dollar ATM.
