    I am a criminal lawyer. It is most definitely theft by finding in respect of the owner of the jumper.
    It is also fraud by misrepresentation on John Lewis .

    Take it back and keep the money and live with the knowledge that you are a thief.
    Do as suggested very sensibly by Brecon Beacons and live with the knowledge that you are trustworthy and a decent person.
    If you had been the loser of the jumper you would hope someone would be honest and return it. The jumper may have been a present and bought with hard earned money.

    If you are an honest person then these scenarios rarely actually present any dilemma. Check if the 'found' location has had any lost property claims. Check if the local police will do anything. Ring the number for the purchasing store (there usually is one on the receipt) & see if they can identify the buyer by the info on the receipt. Anyone losing the item is quite likely to contact the store, so then proceed as if it normal lost property.

    I stand by what I said. I’d seek the advice of the local police - especially, if I was thinking of going to take the sweater to John Lewis to get cash for it.

    Leave the tags on it and wear it whilst serving.

    When a customer says "I lost one just like it", then you've found the owner.

    If the OP returns it for their own benefit then it's theft and fraud, end of story.

    Half of these things aren't even dilemmas. People just seem to want validation or permission for reprehensible behaviour.

    What's next weeks MMD 'My best friend has forgotten about the £1.20 bus fare I lent them 3 years ago, should I murder them?'.
