What you can do is to vote for another party. You may have local elections in a couple of weeks. You can vote Conservative as the only other party likely to form a government or if you dont trust them vote for one of the smaller parties because even though they have no chance of forming a government soon every vote for them sends a message.
    This is called "democracy".

    No, this is called "nonsense".
You do not vote for a national government in the local elections. You vote for local councillors, with the numbers of councillors elected for each party deciding who runs the local council.
In England, that could be any one of labour ("new tories"), conservative ("old tories") or liberal democrats. It could be a mixture of libdems and one of the other two parties. It could even involve independents joining with one of the major parties.
In Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland, local elections involve other parties too, who have a chance of becoming the majority party.
In London, the voting system means that even small parties such as the Greens have a chance of getting one or more candidates elected.
Local elections are a very different proposition to national elections.

Well this for me is just another nail in the coffin.

I earn £14560 and this will loose me an extra £10 a year. this really doesnt seem like a lot. BUT i am the main earner in my house hold as my partner is a student. just makes it feel like even more of a hopeless situation than it is.

we applied to the local council for any kind of benefit we could get and.... well we get £25% off council tax. I'm 24. he's 25. no kids. renting.
The lady practically told us that the only way to make more money was to have a baby.

I would like to say thank you to the goverment for screwing me. I wasnt old enough to vote int he last genral election. I sure as hell WILL be using my vote this time round.

YOU ARE STUCK WITH YOUR DEBT IF YOU CANT BUDGE IT! LOL!
:hello: DFW :hello: Thank you Martin!!! !!! !!! :money:

Good on you for voting next time - but you CERTAINLY were old enough to vote last time:

Unless - of course - the laws of maths have changed such that 24 - 18 now equals 3.

Well, I have to say that these "labour rebels" took their time in speaking up. The demise of the 10% tax band was announced last autumn. This brings me to one of two conclusions: Either

    (i) Politicians really are thick because it takes them at least 5 months to work out that some of the poorest people are going to suffer.

    or

(ii) They didn't really care about it until they realised that actually, this might lose them their seats.

When you consider that things like food/energy/mortgage or rent costs etc usually form a larger proportion of a low paid worker's wage....and that these things have shot through the roof this year, this really is a case of kicking a man (or woman) when they are down!!!

Brown is a blatently blundering, blinkered, babbling, blathering, bl**dy botcher.......and he needs to be shown the back door!

You know, I think I need to take a course in anger management just to listen to these clowns on the radio now

Actually, I've heard that the labour party may consider changing their symbol from the red rose to...well...a latex contraception device, because it more accurately reflects the ethos of the party....

...to allow for inflation, halt production, destroy the next generation, whilst at the same time trying to make people feel safe when they are being screwed.

    There's a third possible conclusion : (i) AND (ii)
    i.e. they're thick AND they don't care.
(With a few notable exceptions of course - but they are not the ones making the decisions in government.)

This latest announcement by Brown is all smoke and mirrors - you can almost see Brown's mind ticking over as he tries to use phrases that mean what he intends doing (i.e. very little) but make it sound (to the flocks of sheep on his back-benches) that he is making concessions to them.
I am amazed that Frank Field appears to have been taken in - perhaps he has had more said to him personally and he is simply too trusting.
Brown cannot compensate all those who lose on the 10p band withdrawal - he doesn't have the money to do so. This announcement was all about avoiding defeat next Monday (and its knock-on effects on the May elections). The PM is no doubt hoping that the matter won't be highlighted quite so much in the Autumn when a few sops will be thrown out to deflect things.

Frank Field had repeatedly tabled questions about it to the Treasury; it isn't as if there hasn't been anyone opposing this within the government; considering it goes against one of Labour's ideologies (one placed inside their constitution, even) my personal surprise is that the fuss a year ago wasn't a lot bigger.

Despite the platitudes ( I feel a con coming on) you can see the gritted teeth look on Gordon Brown's face that he still really is in denial.

A school kid could have done the arithmetic that anyone on £7500 gives £223 to sub the £720 he has given to ALL the 40% tax payers. Anyone who proposed that and believed in that has NO right to call themselves Socialist or Labour.

My local MP says he was given the wrong information beforehand, so did not realise the implications for 13 months !!!! durr...

They failed to realise that ALL retired women from 60 till 65 would be £223 worse off, durr..
That people in their 50's with redundancy packages on low early pensions would be affected.

I really believe the deliberately thought the could get away with it on young single people, but forgot about the above.

Last week GB said whilst in the US " that there were no losers" durr..

What they have still forgotten is the millions of part time workers without children or empty nesters, who HAVE to work to make ends meet. These have partners, so it is not just 5.3 million BUT around 8+ million who are about to feel it .

Good timing Gordon, just before the elections. :D

Gordon yuppie Brown the Fat Cats Friend should take on the new title of Sheriff of Nottingham.

Hey, from May 18 2008, all those who earn more than £34600 will get a bonus as the 40% tax bracket is shifting upwards. Meaning if you earn £36000 or above, you pay £280 less tax in the year... good old Labour, Kick the poor in the teeth and when they are down.... and then kick them again.

    Working mans government are they...LOL

Maybe if there are any backbenchers who want to stop this from happening, they could start moaning about this....next year (well took them long enough to work out the 10p tax band removal was a con)

    :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

You are right though. The "rebel" MPs only spoke out when the chances of the party winning the next election took a seriuos blow.

They dont give a s**t for the poor
