Bespoke furniture damaged

Options
In August we ordered our children a bed from a company who specialise in making bespoke beds.
Initially we had problems being told it would be delivered on such a date and it never happened. We did get a refund and were told if we ordered again we could expect delivery in January. For once they were true to their word.

So on Wednesday evening our bed arrived and the fitters built it for us in the room. After they left we had a good look and found so many issues with it. Some that I’m scared to let my children sleep on it. It’s a double double bunk bed and my main issue with it is the lack of support the mattress base has at the top of the bed. There is a support beam but it’s currently supporting.....thin air!!!
Other issues are: they’ve drilled right though the side of the ends of the bed, the paint finish is terrible despite boasting that they’re best in their field (the bed was hand painted with a roller and has an orange peel effect to it) The drawers under the bed don’t line up when they close and have random screws poking out of them. There is also an additional drawer and not what we originally ordered. The wood is split where they’re drilled straight into it, they’ve almost missed the wood where theyve screwed into it and there’s a bulge at the front of the bed where the screw is and anyway, I’m sure you get the jist of problems.

I have contacted them and I felt like they almost laughed at me and said these things are cosmetic and that the bed is structurally sound. But they will get their fitters to come round and rectify the problem when they’re next in the area.....this company is based in Ireland and we waited 4+ months for this bed to come so I don’t see the fitters coming by anytime soon.
So in the meantime I have a huge bed sat in my girls bedroom that I will not use, my upstairs has been turned upside down with the stuff out of the bedroom and I don’t know what to do.

Where do I go from here?
We paid via AmEx and the bed wasn’t far off £1k

Thank you if you managed to read all of this 😊

I have photos but can’t see how you can add them on here (or if you can)

With the photos, you can upload them to a site like photobucket and post the link. I'm not sure if you have enough posts to be allowed to post links. If it won't let you just replace the dots with spaces and someone else will fix it for you :)

Where do you go from here? Make a thorough list of all the problems, take photos of each one and write to them telling them what resolution you want (which is what, to reject the bed for a full refund? Money off?) and giving them a reasonable time to sort it. Do not use the bed in the meantime. If you are going to reject it, do not use it.

I don't know much about Amex but assuming they provide the same cover most credit cards do, they are your next port of call if the supplier won't put right the problems.

First question is, what would you like them to do about it? If you want them to take it back and refund you, tell them that you are exercising your 30 day right to reject due to it being of unsatisfactory quality. They will probably want to send someone to inspect it.

If they delay this unreasonably or say that it isn't faulty, take it to your credit card company. If they do send someone and their technician declares it not faulty, you can arrange your own inspection through an independent company. Be aware that there's no guarantee that the person doing the inspection will agree with you about the faults, although from what you've described it does sound pretty bad.

It is not relevant that these faults are cosmetic, as the item you purchased was a bespoke order and not dirt cheap or sold as a second, any reasonable person would expect it to be in brand new condition and reasonably well made.
Well informed on the subjects of sofas and wood furniture, and well opinionated on everything else :rotfl:

    Thank you for your replies

We would like them to come and take the bed away and issue a refund. I don’t think it’s going to be that simple though.
I have made a list and taken photos of the concerning areas.
I will have an email written up and see where we go from there.

I remember a thread about this and after looking at other designers of MDF " fantasy" beds thinking there were other small companies out there who were making dangerous beds

What age do they state the beds are suitable for?

Why is that relevant? The OP isn't happy with the quality of the bed.
