This allows your tv access to the internet, which it needs for the various smart tv apps.
The Wifi does replace a cable,
So.................. I DO NOT need a lead to allow a smart TV to access the internet*
Wasn't that what I originally asked ?
* but, if I wanted to view the TV screen to use my computer, then I DO need a lead - YES ?
thanks
It depends on the TV, not all are wireless and you may need a wireless adapter.
Some TVs allow screen mirroring so you can display the PC, Phone, tablet etc. using the home wifi network with no cable, or as is normally the case you can buy an adapter for that also.
Goto to a decent TV shop and see all the options at your price point.0 -
tv is sourced. LG smart/wifi.
Have decided I will get a long lead, as well0 -
Yes, connect wirelessly - you tell the TV to connect, it looks for WiFi networks, it should find your router's WiFi network, and you enter the password, you are then 'connected' - not physically. You say 'connect', then you say WiFi which surely is a wireless signal ??
It's instead of an ETHERNET, or NETWORK cable, that carries 'computer data' - HDMI is a completely different type of cable, that carries video and audio data, and a completely different specification.WiFi will NOT replace an HDMI cable.
What is the point of WiFi then ?
Exactly - your phone receives data - not a TV picture. It receives information from the internet. Similarly, your TV would receive information from the internet. The best example of this would be BBC iPlayer, the catch up service. You can do this over WiFi, and broadband, but if you didn't have WiFi you would use an ethernet cable to connect the TV to the router. What IS WiFi, in the TV then. I thought to replace the cable. If I sit in Wetherspoons, the have free WiFi and my phone picks this up, ie wirelss, no lead.
Computer connected = TV is just like a big monitor for your computer. Both I suppose. What is the difference
Not much info here, but I guess they're just getting iPlayer etc over WiFi as I described.Spoke to someone at work, the have same make of TV - NO LEADSo.................. I DO NOT need a lead to allow a smart TV to access the internet*
Correct - IF the TV has WiFi.
No - this is what you said about Smart TVs and computers - so we had to pick it apart.Wasn't that what I originally asked ?
with a new smart tv (using wifi for comuter)

Almillar, thanks very much. A little knowledge is dangerous and I didn't explain v well.
TV coming,, have ordered a bunch of hdmi leads (as I dont know what I will need), incl a 30ft one (just in case).
I like to try and sort things out before the problem occurs. Often it just creates more !0 -

It depends.
WiFi is simply a wireless network, the ability for the TV to send and receive data. Connect to a router and this enables this data to be sent to and from the other devices connected to the same switch/ router. If the router is connected to the internet then the data can go to anything else connected to the internet.
What capabilities that creates depends on the applications that the sending and receiving device has. It absolutely can mean picture and sound can be sent from one device to another without the use of a cable if both devices have this capability set up and use the same protocols to do this.
So with my setup my TV can send what its displaying/ sound to my iPhone or iPad whilst I am connected to my network using their own app on my phone/ipad.
Unfortunately the TV doesnt have a built in app to allow me to do the reverse (ie send from my iPhone or MacBook) to the TV and so I bought an AppleTV that connects to the TV with HDMI and does allow me to mirror my desktop onto the TV and play sound through it. In theory there is no reason why this couldnt be built into the TV its just Samsung and Apple havent decided to make this happen.0 -

I hope you didn't pay very much for your "bunch" of cables. No need to spend a great deal on HDMI0 -

I believe it is WiFi - I'd have a read on the AV Forums which model is currently recommended at your price point. There is a lot of experience on there to call on.
The one thing I would say is if you are buying from Richer Sounds then always call your local store and see what they can do on price. About half my set up has come from there and never have they not either offered a discount or thrown something in for free.0 -
I ordered a 30ft hdmi cable (should have been ethernet - doh!)
Richer sounds seem good. TV is £429 with them, though with a 5 yr g'tee.
Apparently for this model, if I want the 'magic remote' £25, I also need a bluetooth dongle (didn't know that before I bought it), which is free with Richer sounds (£20 otherwise)0 -
I have a switchbox, with a total of 6 hdmi slots. All are already used up but thankfully my Chromecast enables a wireless stream to my TV.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
