Employment and Support Allowance Support Group Rates

Options
Hi Everybody

I want to make sure that I'm getting the correct amount for my ESA support group payments, as what get doesn't seem to correspond to the amount stated on the government website.

I am currently claiming as a couple and been put into the support group catergory. The ESA payments are income based, not contribution based and my partner and I are both in our early 40's.

I'm pretty sure that is all the information I need to supply to get an accurate amount, I'd be very grateful if anyone could confirm for me the weekly rate we should be getting.

Many thanks in advance.

Would it not be £177.50? Made up of couple allowance £114.85, plus Support Group component £38.55 plus Enhanced Disability Premium (couple) £24.10.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Yes I think you're correct, apologies.

  • Many thanks to you and Ruby for the very prompt replies, I do appreciate it and it has confirmed that I am indeed getting less than I should be. I'm currently getting roughly the same amount as the base ESA rate, it seems like the support group component and enhanced disability premium haven't been added. I do have a letter from the DWP confirming that I am in the support group, so there is no reason why these should not be added.

One quick question I have regarding the enhanced disability premium, do I need to be claimimg Personal Independence Payments to be entitled to this?

    Enhanced disability premium

To get this, you must be under pension credit age.
You must get the disability premium or income-related ESA, and one of the following:
    • PIP daily living component at the higher (‘enhanced’) rate
    • AFIP
    • DLA care component at the highest rate
You’ll also get this if you’re in the support group for income-related ESA.

No, you should receive this as you are in the Support Group.

To receive the Severe premium you would need to be claiming Daily Living Personal Independence Payment, (along with the other eligibility criteria).

  • Many thanks to you and Alice for your very prompt replies, and making it so much easier to umderstand what I should be getting. My payments fall a long way short of what I should be getting, so I will be calling the DWP on Monday to get this sorted.

Thanks again to all who have responded to my queries, you are all stars!

looking back at previous threads i see that you and your partner both claim PIP, is this still correct? Did you cancel the carers allowance claim and both claim the SDP like you were advised in this thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5891781
  • Hi Poppy

My partners PIP award is currently in the appeal stage as a recent review determined that she was fit for work, even though we both know she isn't. My PIP award has now ended and I've been told that I have to reapply, which is currently in progress. We receive no other benefits other than housing and council tax benefit.

Do you know if this would have any impact on the amount of ESA we should be getting?
