Cost of bodywork repair

These newer cars panels are made of foil, new outer sill, possibly hinges and king pins and a door prep and paint and labour will set you back around £900-1500 small car see so it’s best practice to repaint whole side or you’ll spot any repair as the door is the largest panel on the side of the car they stand out when repaired cheaply I can spot UPs MII’s C1 and 107’s budget repairs easily.0

To be honest I don't really care that much about the paint being 100%, as I always keep my cars until they are old and worth nothing, so it's not as if I will be looking to sell it any time soon:)
I just can't stand the door crunching every time I open it:eek:Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
My OH thinks I should claim for it through my insurance. If I do this is it likely to double my premium next year?
Just wondered if anyone has an idea of the impact making a claim.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Increase? Yes.
Will it be cheaper to PIY in the long run? Probably.
Are you happy to lie to every insurer for the next five years? Only you know.
How much NCB do you have, and is it protected?
Are you a young/new driver? <edit: Just seen your sig saying you stopped smoking 12yrs ago, so I'm guessing you aren't a teenager!>0 -

I don't see how I would be lying to them if I paid for it. If I had hit my own gatepost and paid for the repair they wouldn't need to know.
I have been driving for circa 45 years. I have 16+ years protected NCD.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

<cough>CLAIMS
Have you had any motor accidents, claims or losses in the past 5 years, no matter who was at fault or if a claim was made?
[ ] YES [ ] NO
It is really important to tell us about any claims (including unsettled claims), accidents or losses that are motor vehicle related.I have been driving for circa 45 years. I have 16+ years protected NCD.
It's going to dink the premium, but probably not badly.0 -
Well, you know how they ask you...
<cough>
Would you say "yes" or "no" to that?
So late 60s at least, on the cusp of premiums starting to go up again because of age. NCB past "full" - 5/6yrs - is ignored. If it's protected, you might be lucky.

If that is the case then why would anybody bother to pay for damage caused themselves and then go and declare it as an accident? I thought that was the whole point of people not claiming on their insurance, to keep their premiums from going up. Anyway it is not really an accident per se, more a stupid scrape, which I hold my hands up to and admit was totally my own fault.
BTW I am not quite in my late 60's yet - middle 60's;)Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

I would try a smart repair provider to see if they can repair. If you google “smart repair” you will get a list of local companies. Chips Away is a national franchise for instance, but there will be local ones too.
You would pay probably a quarter (Or even less) of what a traditional body shop would charge.
However, depending upon the damage they may not be able to help, but they are certainly worth a try and they will normally give good advice too if they are not in a position to assist.0 -
Telling your insurers is purely your own decision.
I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t but thats my own personal choice and liability, 95% of the people in this thread wouldn’t either, their just merely highlighting it.0
