The op hasn't revealed their salary so it's hard to make any informed decisions. They may be able to get a mainstream card, if depends on their credit history and salary, none of which we know of.

Your travel insurance should offer protection as well for certain situations. Credit card protection is the last option if they fail.0

Get a banker's draft? Don't involve a friend - recipe for disaster if anything goes wrong, and we've seen many the end of a perfect friendship on these boards where friends fall out over money.0
