I have a problem with my laptop.
It's a HP pavilion Intel core i3 7th gen.
For a few mins its works when turned on then cannot open anymore applications or minimise any. Can't open more tabs. It's not frozen because I can move around in that tab but can't come out of a tab either. Then I can't open any further apps and can't switch between apps Can't even open the start menu.
Watching you tube is very slow.
It's Windows 10.
I use Microsoft Edge as the browser.
I use McAfee virus checker.
I've run a scan and it's says it's safe. Everything active normal.
Any ideas what's wrong and what I need to do to fix it.
Many thanks.

Is the CPU fan running a lot? Press CTRL-ALT-ESC to start Task Manager, click on the performance tab and what is the CPU usage? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I suspect it's cluttered with junk programs, try CCleaner to see what is running on startup. Lots of problems occur with default installations of software adding "me too" to the start menu.
There are many "de-clutter" programs, free ones that are OK are CCleaner, Bleachbit and PC Decrapifier.

Other issues can be the AV scanning at high priority, Windows updates wanting to muscle in, the list goes on... As Tarambor mentioned, it's worth seeing what is tying up your laptop.
Another issue could be overheating, is the fan clear of fluff and running OK?0 -
I'd be looking at an update trying to install (unsuccessfully) and hogging all the disk/cpu resources.0
