Non-ebay adverts coming from ebay email address

I have just started to get spam email from an ebay email address (ebay_@_ebay.co.uk) but it has nothing to do with ebay. They are betting, laser eye treatment adverts etc with no mention of ebay. They come into the "ebay" folder I have set up in my email browser. When I note them as spam, they are not deleted but a message comes up as follows:

"You marked your contact's (ebay_@_ebay.co.uk) message as spam. Do you think that this account may be compromised?"

Below the message they they ask for "yes" or "no". or just cancel. If I click yes or no the email goes into my spam folder, if "cancel" it stays where it is.

I have the offending address in my contact's list, I assume because I have used it in the past to contact ebay. It is an address ebay has used to send genuine emails regarding items I have been bidding on.

I wonder if this is going to be a problem for me. The offending emails are not standard phishing emails where the email says it is from ebay - ebay is not mentioned in the emails except in the email address. The adverts are for mostly high street companies. I have not clicked on anything in the emails.

I am reluctant to keep putting them in my span folder as that might mean my browser will start to put genuine emails from ebay into my span folder automatically.

Any thoughts anybody?

What are you using for your email client? Is that the cause for the messages?

Could it be a "spoofed" email address? Some spammers have worked out how to disguise their actual email address and make it look like it came from someone else.

This Google article explains spoofing: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/50200?hl=en

Yes, I was thinking that it could be a spoofed email address. The actual email address is disguised in some way. It is strange that they are not pretending to come from ebay but just using their address. It could be just a way of getting past span filters. The adverts contained in the emails although for well know names could be fake and just used to get people to click on them. They all have an "unsubscribe" link which might be a fake way of getting unsuspecting people to give them personal information.

What does the unsubscribe link popup show when you put your mouse over it?

    Checked the email header?

When I put the mouse over "unsubscribe" I get nittygritty.us/..... I have checked this address and it looks like a legitimate company.

The email header is very strange and is as follows:

Spam title (e.g. "Laser Surgery") followed by: <ebay_@_ebay.co.uk> (without underscores). When mouse put over - no onscreen message.
To: set of 16 random numbers/letters. When mouse put over - onscreen message has my email address.

    Compare with normal header:

Name of sender followed by their email address. When mouse put over - onscreen message repeats this.
To: my email address. When mouse put over - onscreen message repeats this.

Is the sender someone you bought from a year or two ago?

I do not know who the real sender is, they seem to be hiding behind an ebay email address.
