I completely understand what your going thorough with them.
My OH is in exactly the same boat, they are really not helping him as well as i feel they should be!
Its a catch 22, you cant get a job without it, but the job centre will only pay if you are offered a job:mad:
He told me about the maths and english tests, what is the world coming to? They have all of your quals in their systems and if you have o'level or GCSE maths and english then what is the point of doing a test which costs money??
Im baffled!
Good luck with your search for work :money:0 -
I forgot to mention that I did not have to pay to opt out of any English or Maths tests, as the training company did not include them and rightly so. I now have work as my reward for bowing down to government backed extortionists, just to show them I can use common sense. I had done cd rom mock tests without any revision, and I passed every one on common sense alone. I actually trained the training company by alerting them to the fact that revision materials were available to them in various languages, this was because an Italian chap was having difficulty reading the questions and the tutor did not know how to deal with it. These are the kind of businesses that the jobcentres are sending people to, and if it was'nt real it would be funny.0

The Jobcentre have suggested i get a CSCS card to assist me in finding employment in the Carpentry and Joinery sector, i signed on today and they phoned the CSCS people there and then and now i'm due to start one of the courses, i am qualified to a city and guilds level one in joinery...but what i want to know is what will this course entail, is it a test are they teaching skills..what?
The woman at the jobcentre sounded a bit clueless to honest, all i know is that many employers want this CSCS card...i will add that i took my City and Guilds 20 years ago and am really not that up to scratch with the trade to be honest, it's just something i mentioned i wouldn't mind getting back in to...but i'm worried like it's some sort of Test i've been bamboozled in to here and instead perhaps a refresher course might have been the better option, trouble with the job centre is they are full of clueless idiots and i'm not talking about the poor sods signing on!!
You dont need to take the however many days course to do this, it cost £17.50 for a 30 question test, you can get a copy of the cscs book at wh smith to revise rather than waste your time on a course with JC+0 -
this CSCS scheme is crap. i`ve been a time served joiner for 22 years, did my 4 year apprenticeship, passed my skills test with 100% pass, did 2 years or college (block release) passed my cscs card "test" then handed all my paperwork to them to get my card, when after about 18 months of trying to get the card they informed me that because i didnt have a C & G cert. i wouldnt be getting it. my understanding was that C & G was an exam after your 3rd year of college (which i was not allowed to do) for advanced craft, which i believe is more aimed at workshop joinery, ( stair, windows etc). now the firm i was with put me through the test, but they did nothing to help me out with it either. now because i`m unemployed and dont have the sacred CSCS cardthey wont even look at me. was told i could get a general labour cscs card but what use is that to a joiner? the whole scheme just reeks of crap to me. started up on my own so i dont need it now. just seems a complete waste of time, but i know guys who have them who claim they`re joiners ( might have slept with 1 !!!) and got them no bother because they "worked with daddy" and didnt need the C&G cert?!?!?!?!
building trades loss as far as i`m concerned.
thought there was some sort of scoring card being introduced....cscs is just health and safety and nothing to do with joinery skills or whatever trade you do. save yer money and dont bother with it.
oh and the dole never offered me any help at all, and now the decide to stop my money because i live with my gf who works more that 24 hours a week. i paid into the system 22 years and have had nothing out of it!!!!!0 -
If you are a time served joiner for 22 yeas, you should have got your NVQ through OSAT and have never had to go near an apprenticeship. If you have an NVQ in C&J and have passed the H&S test, you should be able to apply for your card.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

I too am being denied the JC paying for a course to get a cscs card so that I may do basic labouring on a building site, despite the fact i'm 48yrs old, went to grammar school, obtained eight O-Levels, did an Engineering apprenticeship upto and including lvl3 C+G in mechanical engineering and maintenance. This compulsory Maths / English course is a JOKE AND AN INSULT, and I shall be writing a complaint to my local MP about it, not that it will help at all, but at least I will have voiced my disgust at the current wasteful system. :mad:0
