Need Help!!!! Car Insurance PLEASE

hi i have just signed up looking for advice and tips about car insurance heres my problem
im 17 years old i just passed my driving test 5 weeks ago and have not currently had the money to get car insurance becasue all the quotes are ranging from £2000 - £10000 on a peugeot 206 1.1L which is my mothers car. I dont get all the named driver and policy stuff i just want to reduce the prices if i can? I have left school a year now and did not go into further education and wanted to get a job but ive found it hard to find someone that will take me on because im young and in experienced. Since christmas i have been working on and off with my cousin but not reguarly and i wasnt to sure if i should mention this to the insurance companies shall I mention it? Will it reduce the amount that it will cost me? also my insturctor is telling me to do PASS PLUS with him privatley, does the insurers actually take the 30% off and if im doing it privatley how can i prove that i have done it, will my instructor give me something? I have a few friends that have recently passed and there insurers have quoted them £1500 and when i ring them up they give me a higher price, my friends are the same age as me?? I just need pointers in the right directions. Also if you can point out some good insurers that take on young drivers that would be great thanks for reading and thanks in advance to anyone who replys to me.

There are lots of threads on here about car insurance for young drivers - you will have to do the leg work and read through them. However for pointers:-

Who is going to use your mum's car the most - if it is you, then she must tell her insurers otherwise in the event of a claim she could find herself with no insurance.

She must tell her insurers if she is going to allow you to drive the car (even if she thinks it is insured for any driver) to make sure that you are insured. There is likely to be an additional premium for her to pay and in the event of a claim with damage to her car she will have to pay the excess under the policy plus any young driver excess. There may also be an excess to pay if the damage is only to somebody else's property - she will have to check and see what her policy says in the terms and conditions. Be aware that any claims may cause a drop in her no claims bonus and an increase in her premium next year.

If she is giving the car the you, then you will have to get insurance in your own name so that you start earning your own no claims bonus. You will have to pay a high premium as young drivers who have just passed their test have the most accidents. Don't try and get the insurance in your mum's name as insurers are wise to this and it can cause all sorts of complications.

Unfortunately for you, insurance costs have gone up because there have been more claims. Insurance is a pool where the premiums of many pay for the losses of the few - if the losses of the few have increased then the premiums of the many have to go up the following year, as it is likely that there will be even more claims.

Hi, Jake. Most young lads (I'm eighteen and don't drive) Want soemthing sport, stylish etc. Honestly, I find getting a commercial vehicle (I was doing quotes just seeing what I'll afford to insure when I pass) I did a Land Rover Defender. Fully comp £2150 Fully comp (That's in a high crime area so god knows how cheap it'll go down if you live somewhere quiet.) Ideally go with independent specialist insurers as they give cheaper quote. Alternatively get on eBay and get yourself a Classic car. They're cheap as chips on insurance and pretty nifty too. Good luck!

first of all thank for your replies
if i use my mums car i think that i would use it more than her so am i best off to get my own insurance or get put on her policy?
Ben, do you no any independent insurers i only no off the big name insurer e.g direct line those types, but as i said the cheapest quote ive had for a 1.1l peugeot 206 has been £2000 i would off thought it would be way cheaper than that but could it be that im percieved as a 'boy racer' and the fact where i am from probably dont help things aswell (essex). what would you call a classic car aswell? and mikey its alot cheaper for girls though isnt it?
Also can i get some advise on PASS PLUS, weather i should do it or not.
    Thanks in advance

It's difficult to predict whether it makes a difference or not, but definitely try putting "part-time employed" down - it may well be cheaper than "unemployed".

Yes, your instructor will give you a certificate on completion that you can declare to the insurance companies. At your age, it will make a BIG difference to premiums and is definitely worthwhile. How much is your instructor proposing to charge? There are some Pass Plus schemes depending on where you live - I'm in Wales so I did mine for £20.

Postcode makes the biggest difference of all... you might live nearby but your specific area might have a higher risk or at least a higher claims history.

If you're the main driver, you definitely need the policy to be in your name. Adding your parents as named drivers on your policy will help to drive down the cost, along with any other older friends / relatives.

Follow Martin's guide - use the price comparison sites to find as many quotes as possible, then scour the cashback sites for an extra bit of discount.

    Good luck!

The idea of Pass Plus is to give you more and wider experience of general driving after passing your test, you will get a certificate to say you have done the course.

Some insurance companies will give a discount up to 30% if you have completed the course they will want to see the certificate, your instructor should have a list of these companies.

The complete Pass Plus course takes six hours, is he offering the six hours for £100 instead of £150, which would be equal to £25 per hour.

Have a look here to see if there's a Pass Plus discount scheme where you live:

Yes, putting your mother down as Named Driver on your policy will reduce the premium.

I don't know of any specific Young Driver insurers that aren't on the price comparison websites.
