Barclays !!!!!!??

Top man/woman/person delete as applicable (providing you have photo ID PMSL) :rotfl:
That was the one i thought i applied for, obviously not.
A "cash card account", at Barclays or elsewhere, is not a full current account. It is literally cash-in, cash out. No debit card facility (in in some cases, no direct debits/standing orders either). Is that what you were in the market for??
Current accounts = debit card of some type, often a chequebook, and ability to apply for an overdraft (whether you're accepted for it or not is irrelevant), and full DD/STO entitlements. Hence the need for photo ID.£1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50/£600
HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500
"3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600 :eek:0 -

Even if you haven't actually opened the accounts, you've got as far as the application stage. StrangeBut hey, it's your money. Don't forget that CAs form part of your credit file, even if they come without overdraft/other credit facilities...
I understand what you're saying and can see why it'd be inconvenient/frustrating for you, but, I wouldn't call it "discrimination". There's nothing stopping you from a) obtaining photo ID (albeit at a cost), or b) simply not banking with Barclays. There's plenty of other choice, as you've indicated above. You're not missing out on anything by being 'denied' a CA with Barclays.
I'd sooner bank with an institution that rigorously checks the ID of its prospective customers, even if that means unfortunately turning some people away. And as it happens, I do bank with Barclays, but I bank elsewhere also. Perhaps I've become so accustommed to showing my passport in all of my banks' branches that I don't even think about it anymore (even with HSBC, with whom I've banked with for quite some time, I'm still regularly asked to present ID at the counter, when withdrawing money, asking for balances, etc.)
You misread me. I haven't 'attempted' to open accounts - i have succeeded. That's the whole point.
For me personally i feel it does discriminate against people who might not want a passport of driving license for thier own reasons, but would like to bank with Barclays, particularly if they are in an isolated village with no access to another bank. That's just one example by the way, not my own situation.
Barclays even asked me to take a letter showing my overdraft limit because they said they wanted to match it, they were offering a great deal which was why i thought i would go and see them.
Naturally had i known that you can't have an account with Barclays unless you have a passport stamped on your backside from birth i wouldn't have bothered to reply to the letter they send inviting me into branch. :rotfl:0 -

That's just one account at barclays though. The other accounts i have are all full current accounts with visa debit & cheque book. All done without photo ID & with much more than just a cash card.
I guess Barclays are just different. I think i'll still keep the Barclaycard with a £2,000 credit limit that they practically threw at me with no photo ID whatsoever though - now can you see the irony of that? lol :rotfl:0 -
i know when i apply to abbey online they ask for no id at all give them a go0

It may vary from location to location. I opened a current account with Abbey some years ago, and they were pretty strict on ID.
Perhaps the OP's local Barclays branch has had some issues with fraudsters attempting to open current accounts, hence the crackdown?
Some uniformity would be nice :rotfl:£1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50/£600

Just want to add that i can sort of see thier stand point, but i just think they are perhaps being a little unrealistic in just making an assumption that everyone will automatically have photo ID.
I don't mind though, i just thought it was weird that they are the only one to make that a necessity whereas other institutions are happy to accept other forms of ID if you don't have photo ID, rather than just turning you away & offering no alternative means to identify yourself, even if you have absolutely everything else that other banks are happy to accept.0 -
dunno if it applies but i opened one of the halifax reward account things and they never asked me to produce ID. a little disclaimer thingy said they would try match my details with those held on voters roll.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000
