The OP of the code was meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee:j:j.
As for your seat choice, absolutely perfect - I've chosen the exact same ones for my trip ! Assuming that you are flying out of Manchester, the 767-300 that AA use doesn't have all the whizzbang entertainment features of a 777, but the seats that you've picked DO have a power supply, so if you take your own DVD player/laptop with you you'll get to see some decent films rather than the old stuff that they usually put on (currently showing is 'Dan in Real Life', 'Martian Child', 'Apollo 13' & 'Quiz Show', I can hardly wait :rotfl::rotfl:) , but given that I got the tickets for a steal, I'm not fussed in the slightest.
BTW, I am absolutely convinced that on that plane, in that section the seats still have the extra legroom. I always go for seats in that section and they do seem a lot roomier than in the rear section of a 767-300.0 -
Been following this thread on and off as am planning our family trip to West Coast this summer (July/August - doh - the joys of being a teacher!). After a week in Rhode Island we are flying into:
Las Vegas (2 nights),pick up car, then Grand Canyon (2 nights), then Needles (via Oatman) 1 night, San Diego (5 nights) then Los Angeles (3 nights), then fly home via 4 nights New York.
Altogether spending 3 weeks away and my question for those of you who have done this sort of trip before is "how/what do you pack"? We are hopeless at 'economical packing'. How do you keep the weight down?
Top tips please!!!
Thanks:TTaking control, slowly.:rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Go with empty suitcases, you end up buying loads of clothes while your there!!
Stayed in the Excalibur in December, all OK. Most of the hotels are the same(not the Mandalay or Mirage, they looked posh), fancy on the outside, just a hotel on the inside, Its just a place to crash out, our demands for a hotel ended up being, does it have free wifi, and does it do waffles for breakfast! Most of the Vegas hotels inside reminded me of amusement arcades you find in seaside holiday places, even down to the red patterned carpet. Having traveled for a week around California before Las Vegas I wasn't keen, so many other far nicer places to see, but the fact is you have to see Las Vegas!!0 -

It will be slightly more difficult for you to do this as you are away for 3 weeks but the principal is the same, as to the weight aspect, try to spread your things around rather than his and hers, it is usual that the woman takes more so you will need to trade space. Shoes are a weight killer, I only ever teake the shoes that I am wearing and buy new ones when I get there ($10-15), cosmetics and toiletries can mount up as well, some people will carry enough to last the whole trip forgetting that there are shops where they are going.
When you start your return journey your troubles with weight will start again so you need to have a carry-on as big as possible as they are counted by size rather than weight and also use the mail, nothing to stop you posting a parcel to yourself.0 -

Oh I am so envious! We have done the west coast bit several times and it is fantastic! The first time we went for a month. Ended uo not wearing any clothes from one suitcase and had to buy a new suitcase to carry all the stuff we bought!
July/August will be gorgoeus and hot - warm. We were in Needles and Oatman at the same time last year and you should expect 100 - 110. Needles is a stop over 'town' and we stayed at the Best Western Colorado River Inn.
It had an indoor pool which you think of as strange but it was welcome after the heat of the desert. A great place to eat is the Wagon Wheel. Lovely food and plenty of it. We did Oatman for the first time visiting Clarke Gable and Carol Lombard's honeyoon hotel! The burros (little donkeys) walk the main street and are very tame. We had a thunderstorm when we wehn to the GC but this is VERY rare so don't think of packing a rain coat! Very warm here but slightly cooler in the evenings.
What to pack?? Over 18 years of going to the states, I regularly 'down size' but still manage to come home without having worn something! If you have teenagers, they tend to want more clothing options in my experience. No 'dressing up at Grand Canyon, Oatman or LV for us. Even at the upper end hotels and gaming tables, people were in shorts but I guess if you are a serious gambler or want to do shows, you would need one option for smart clothing. In LA, we only did theme parks and the beach so shorts again. Going out for a meal in the evening was also shorts time (and the cinema). San Diego should be 70 - 80s, shorts.
I guess 4 nights in NY makes it a bit more tricky; we've only been here in Feb when it was -12! Summer will be hot. I would imagine that it's shorts all day possibly more 'smart' in the evening with long trousers for males so not sure.
My advice would be to lay out all the clothes you would like to take a week in advance then the day before you pack, half them! Seriously! If needs be, there are always washing facilities. For females - undies I wash out every day so no need for your entire possessions; 3 - 4 pairs of shorts, 3 cut off trousers, 1 dress, 3 swimsuits, 10 tops (mixture of strappy, short sleevs and 3/4 shirts), 1 dress or long skirt and one light weight cardi/wrap. Flip flops and 2 pairs of comfy sandals/flat shoes. Voila. Only take towels if you intend going to the beach (avoid thick, fluffy new ones and you could always discard if you don't want to carry them home) as most hotels have their own pool towels.
Have a fabulous time. We shall be returning next year! Currently trying to figure out Murphy the Cat's AA discount to see if we can get a deal for NY end of June. Haven't figure it out yet so back to the drwaing board!
Cheers:beer:0 -
Hi there Murphy the Car - I have just been enjoying dipping into your thread.
Just wanted to say that I went to the Excalibur with my family a couple of years ago. My son was 7 then and one of the highlights of the whole 3-week touring holiday for him was watching the Krispy Kreme doughnut machine in the Excalibur food court. I kid you not! He still talks about it.
We also enjoyed wandering round Luxor, next door - completely over-the-top but great "Wow" factor. And of course we went to the pool - but it was very crowded.0 -
Hi guys, so i thought i'd ask the experts!
I was originally looking for 10 nights in the states early June. 4 nights NYC and 6 nights Miami. But it's hurricane season from June in Miami so we've changed our minds.
Now i'm looking for 3 Nights NYC, 7 Nights Los Angeles. Leaving on a Weds ideally. Looking for flights from Manchester.
As you guys probably know Manchester isn't easy. AA only fly to Chicago, (which seems senseless to go past NYC to come backwards on a connection) they do codeshare with a BA but that's always expensive. So that leaves delta and continental, both of whom i've not seen a sale on for ages, do they have them??????
Coming back from LAX-ORD(Chicago)-MAN seems perfect though, so back to AA, and with the 15% discount then all the better.
Am i looking too early? All the cheapest fares seem to be in a months time. So is it worth me waiting until a month before we plan to go?
Also where to stay in LA, which area? We'd like to be close to centre, theme parks etc, but easy MTA access to beaches? Will we need a car? Are there any rules regarding driving with british licience with 9 penalty points on?
Sorry for the ranting post, but i'm confused.0 -

Hi Danny
I've just had a quick shufty for you and I got a fare of £486.10 for you, flying from Man on 4th June, from NYC on 7th & from LAX on 14th June when I did a quick search. the flights seemed pretty well timed as well.
Is that the sort of money you'd like to pay ? It may get cheaper if you 'finesse' the dates a bit !
BTW, if you just went to LAX the fare was £396. or slightly less if you came back slightly earlier.
see ya later, off to the gym !0 -
