American cup measurements?
I'm coming round to the idea of using cups for baking instead of weighing. I'm sure someone posted a conversion table on this board but I can't find it so I've searched on Google and found that although everyone agrees 1 cup of flour = 4oz, there is some debate about what a cup of sugar is. I have a measuring…

Home made bagels
I haven't been here a while, so apologies if this has been done to death in my absence - did search and couldn't find anything. Do move as necessary. Anyway, today I made bagels and they were so successful, I'd like to share the recipe. I made cinnamon and raisin because they're the ones I buy if they're on a BOGOF. I…

Chocolate Truffles recipe?
Having made Mado's fab vanilla fudge, I'd like to try chocolate truffles for Christmas. Anyone got a tried and trusted recipe they'd like to share?

Gas bill challenge - Winter 2008
I have to admit that although I've always been pretty good about shopping around, switching to cheapest suppliers and other aspects of home economics, the energy bills has always been my downfall. I've just accepted that our annual usage is what is is and we have to budget for it. Last winter I went from full-time to…

Where to keep all this home made bread ...
My last bread bin was woodenwith a slidy front - I threw it out when I found little mite like creatures between the wooden slats. It was very old and the wood was split so it had had its day. Since then bread has been homeless in our house, mainly because I'd like one of these (how old style is that? :D ) and I can't bring…

Replacing an integrated fridge freezer - or not
Hello! We have a tall fridge and a tall freezer (about 1730cm high) - they're not an expensive brand but are both relatively new and working well. We have just agreed to buy a house that has an integrated fridge/freezer that is no longer working and the owners have said they will have it repaired. Thinking about it, we…

Steam Generator Iron repair flex?
I have a Tefal Steam Generator Iron that is working perfectly but I've noticed that the fabric covering has 'slipped down' the flex exposing the black wires. It's the flex that goes from iron to base, not the lead that is wired to the plug. Common sense tells me this is not a good thing but is it too dangerous to use? Is…

Tell me about shopping at Lidl's ...
Having read the thread about supermarket mark ups, I feel I should overcome my aversion to my local Lidl. I normally shop at Asda, occasionally Tesco.com. When our Lidl store opened, I tried it but came out and headed for Asda 'cos they didn't have what I needed wanted. My shopping is a mixture of basics and some specifics…

Cheap eggs - Keep some chickens!
This follows on from another thread asking which is best, cheap eggs or free range. Well, with a couple of hens in your back garden, you can have both! What you need 1) a small shed or coop for them to sleep in at night and lay eggs in during the day 2) food and water put out every day 3) letting out in the morning and…

How Little Have You Spent Today? 17Nov
Nobody's started this today and I've already spent £55! This is our weekly shop at Aldi. Except that it ends up every five days or so because we go through 4-6 pints of milk a day  and I can only get 30 pints in my fridge. My budget is £75 per week so I did OK. And Aldi is so small and has such a limited range, I'm…

Sky+ or HDD Recorder?
I have Sky+ with the family pack (£29 per month) but have just got a digital TV. After some debate, we as a family have decided we would be quite happy with just the free channels especially as we can get E4 on Freeview. But we don't want to be without Sky+, or at least the ease of recording and pausing live TV. I think I…

Best 1Mb unlimited to migrate to
When I say best, I mean reliable for as little as I can get. Has to be unlimited too - with Hi-Velocity at £23.99 a month now and quite happy but have noticed prices coming down so wonder if I could do better.

Which Panasonic Breadmaker? SD???
After reading people raving about their Panasonic breadmakers, I'm tempted to replace my less than satisfactory Schneider one. I've searched and found two models SD252 and SD253 - anybody got any advice? The first is available for about £65.

I wanna new TV
Until a couple ago we had a 14" portable that we got from Asda. It was our main TV and we were happy with it. Then we got Sky and the TV wouldn't do, can't remember why, maybe not enough scart sockets so we went to Asda and picked up a cheap (Pacific) 21" set. Kids had portable, still going strong. Large set lasted about 8…

Half Price Iams Cat Food at Asda
At our Asda store last night, some of the Iams cat food had been reduced to half price. The one I got is the Adult Lamb, I think the Senior one was also half price. The other packs of Adult (Chicken and fish) were normal price. I bought half a dozen bags, saving over £30, use by date June 2006.

Cooking for the freezer - vegetarian
June and July are my busiest months for work and in previous years, the rest of the family have taken over the cooking of the evening meal with disastarous results: 2002 - We lived on frozen pizzas, chips, baked potatoes etc 2003 - I taught OH and two teen sons to cook three simple meals each and a rota was drawn up. Lasted…
