Land Transaction Return

So I got a letter to say i have to pay a penalty as the form wasn't received in time.
Does anyone know what the timescales are? I've tried to google it but there seems to be a mix between 14 days after purchase and 28 days.

I've contacted the solicitor but have not heard anything from them... hmmm.

If your solicitor was meant to be submitting the return then any delay is the solicitor's problem, so speak to your solicitor (though you get notified since it's your tax return). The relevant period depends on when you completed and which country we're talking about - but presumably the letter tells you when it was meant to be.

    its now 14 days
it used to be 28 days

if this was part of the solicitor's job then they have been negligent in not filing it (assuming you gave them the money to do so) and you should ask them to pay it.

Thanks. There was no stamp duty to pay as I was a FTB and I assume, as i have the notice from HMRC stating there was no stamp to pay, the solicitor sent the form and it was received but late.

I was certainly not aware that I had anything to send back and as advised completed all paperwork I had been given or advised of.

It seems they weren't aware of the 14 day change then.

They should have been aware. This was their mistake and they should be liable to pay.

The change was announced in the Autumn Budget 2017 - actually was change from 30 days to 14 days (from completion of the sale and purchase). The new time limit will applies to transactions with an effective date on or after 1 March 2019

No excuse for them not knowing.
