Where do I stand with being asked to work after contracted hours without pay?

Thank you everyone. I work in a nursery so its late parents coming to pick their children up then tidying up and getting ready for the next day. This is why I'm worried it'll go down really badly as its been standard accepted practise for years and years.
I don't at all want to kick up a fuss. I'd like to keep my job in the short term until I can do something else but I would like to leave when I'm supposed to just one day a week.
I shall just have to broach the subject and see what happens. If they are going to lose a damn hard worker over 20 minutes of my own time then that is what will be.

To add to the above, I recommend you join a union. They will be able to advise, help and support with this kind of issue0

In a nursery!? Surely the nursery charges the parents who arrive late? All our local nurseries do. Precisely because they have to pay the staff who stay back. Goodness, not paying nursery staff wouldn't go down well with parents in my neck of the woods.0 -
I would suggest a soft and friendly approach first. See if you can strike up a rota of some sort, I know it wont fix the problem of payment but it will pave a way to a resolution.
Then it may be easier to strike up a deal to have them pay one or two the extra and everyone gets to gain, happier workforce = less problems.
If you are seen to be being fair it may go in your favour, it may just be the wine talking

I was told at my enrolment interview that no union spokesperson would be allowed on the premises. I've looked at unions but unsure if they can help me, especially as there is no spokesperson at work.
Not that I know of. Parents can come in at 6.05/6.10 without a word said to them. I'm not bothered about fighting to be paid for it (although I know I should be for the greater workforce) I just want to leave when I should to get to my course.

HMRC should be discrete, 'Just a random spot-check Sir...'I'm on minimum wage and work every minute of those 42.5 hours a week. The extra time after 6 has no reflection on my hours or my pay.

No, no breaks. I'm actually at work 45 hours a week. I deducted the 30 minutes lunch break to get to the 42.5 hours

I'm sure they would be understanding if you explained the situation to them. If not, .. do what I do when I can't get my own way, .. start sobbing uncontrollably, .. it works wonders for me. It's got me out of many a sticky situation. Once, I was on a bus going to Lewisham, and didn't have a ticket, .. an inspector got on at Wapping, and started asking for everyone's tickets .. when he got to me, I fiddled around, and i think he'd sussed that I was a Yonker( slang for person riding on a bus without a ticket), .. so I burst out crying and said It must have fallen out of my pocket, anyhoo, it worked, .. he let me off, and even asked the driver to drive me right outside my house, which upset some of the other passengers, because it was 2 miles off the bus route.0
