Where do I stand with being asked to work after contracted hours without pay?

I work 42.5 hours per week and contracted to finish in the evening. It is expected that all employees stay back 20 minutes after our contracted hours to tidy up. We are not paid for this time.
I have enrolled on a training course that is 30 minute drive away. Doable if I leave at 6pm on the dot as I'm meant to, not doable I I have to stay back.
My employers are not very easy going and rule with an iron rod. I am envisaging problems when I ask to leave on time 1 day a week.
Where do I stand legally? What are my rights? Is there a code if conduct I can have ready to back up my claim for leaving in time? Any help you can give me in this would be very much appreciated.
In that case, leave on time every day of the week.
If they let parents collect late then that's their look out. If they want you to stay until they are collected then they need to pay you to stay.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -

.... I'm quite an honest person and don't want to find I've done something illegal.

Just so long as honesty is a matter of degree.
It's a shabby attitude and of no merit or relevance to op's situation.
Apologies to OP - no intention of hijacking your thread.
Southend is right - contact your Union. A decent employer would be pleased that you are taking such a course on your own initiative. My response to their No Union stance at the outset would have been 'Why is that?' You can't go back to that point, but you can simply leave on time - fait accompli. Let the others question their own complicity in this insidious malpractice.
The following day, your response to colleagues and employer is identical.
'I have to leave on time for my Course'.
Bon courage and enjoy your Course, then onto your next - and better - job.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

just simply leave at your contracted time...simplesFeudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Great
I just wanted to check that I had the right to say 'I have to leave on time' I will leave at the time, regardless of the consequences. If I am let go after my temp contract I will be reporting practise for the other workers.
I've applied for a new job this morning and will look for more later. My employers are not at all nice and don't act fair but expect employees to bend over backwards.
Oh and crying to get my own way? Never. I've too much self respect to do that. I go by the book and expect the same in return.0 -
