Dark screen on my monitor

I've been given a Proview monitor (model no. 468) and the screen is really dark, I can just about see what's on the screen if I squint  The bloke who gave it to me said the frequency might need changing, how do I do that? I've fiddled with the buttons on the monitor and there's no change
Is it something to do with changing the colour setting?

The screen looks very black to look at? but if you look close you can actually see what is displayed on the screen?
It sounds like the backlight has gone. I had to search for the proview 468 and it is a 14" LCD monitor. the way LCD works is it has a panel of lcd bits that displays the colour and then a white light behind it to show the colour brighter the light has stoped working. you could try to buy a wrecked monitor off ebay and hope the light is intact and swap it or you could use one of the many methods on making a progector with an overhead projector and an old LCD panel taken apart.0
