If you have a 'Poundland' in your area they usually have cardmaking stuff and things that aren't intended for cardmaking, but are good for it. They always have sets of lovely stick=on bits ('card toppers') with different themes at £1 which cost about £2 or more at craft shops.

Over Christmas they had kits with everything to make 8 (I think it was 8) cards - the cards, envelopes, stick-on words and 'toppers', sparkly bits and beads and instructions, all for £1. They were nice quality too - not cheap=looking.

If you don't have a Poundland nearby, look out for one of those 'cheap shops' typified by piles of plastic buckets, storage boxes and plant pots outside on the pavement. They all seem to have a little section of crafty stuff at £! and I've had some great bargains from them, including handmade type paper. (If you're in Birmingham, Smash 'n' Grab at Kingstanding Circle is one such shop.)

You can get very reasonable craft materials of all sorts on ebay, but, of course, the postage bumps up the cost.

Shops like 'The Works' and similar, which sell mainly remaindered books, are doing boxes of pre-cut and folded blank cards with matching envelopes at £5 for 50. Different colours and shapes are available. I think the smallest size are only £4.50.

'Partners' stationary shops have a wide range of little bags of all sorts of crafty bits from pipecleaners to foam shapes. Not as cheap as Poundland, but mostly reasonable.

Keep an eye out at your local market. The one I use most, Penkridge, near Stafford, has a craft stall catering mainly for cardmakers. They sell all kinds of card, including bags of offcuts of metallic, pearlised, etc., at reasonable prices.

Cardmaking has become very popular lately and more places are selling materials at reasonable prices, so keep a lookout everywhere. At Christmas i got some really cheap (£1 for 20 sheets) metallic card and rainbow card at a warehouse-type shop (Carol's in Cannock, Staffs), where I'd never seen craft materials before apart from kid's paints and crayons, etc.

    A word of warning!!!
    Cheap craft materials are addictive!
You think of the super, crafty things you can do with them - and they're soooo cheap compared to Hobbycraft! How can you resist?

The answer, which you may have guessed from the length and content of this posting, is you can't, which is why I have a very large wicker hamper FULL of mainly unused paper of all kinds, card, shiny bits, foamy bits, furry bits, sticky bits, etc. etc.

I will use them sometime - honest!

Partners the Stationers have 3 for 2 on all card making supplies and they have a good selection. At the moment they also have 50 cards and envelopes in assorted colours for £3.99 - they're good quality too.
