Writing Cover Letters - Help?!

Hi, I wondered if anyone would be able to help me with what to write in a cover letter for a new admin job?
I have applied for (and got!) lots of jobs before, but it was always online or through temping agencies, so I never had to write cover letters.
This position is a basic admin job for a big company - data entry from home. I don't really know what to put in a letter to them apart from "I desperately need the job and would be really very good at it because I have done this type of job before and am actually over-qualified!"

Slowly working towards earning enough money (through various ventures) to live unworriedly, treat my family and sleep under a lovely roof. x

I'm sure you are joking but whatever you do, don't appear desperate and dn't make it all about you - what can you give to the company you are aplying to?
I am not sure whether employers look at cover letters - the application form or CV should give all the information required.
I would just say 'I am enclosing my application for the above post and look forward to hearing frm you.'£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -

I was joking about what I'd put in the letter!!
Wasn't joking about needing some help with what to write though!Slowly working towards earning enough money (through various ventures) to live unworriedly, treat my family and sleep under a lovely roof. x0 -
This is one that I used to write:
Dear Sirs
I am writing further to your advertisement in x dated x and have pleasure in enclosing my CV herewith. (add a bit here as to why you are applying - do not under any circumstances use the word desperate - you need to sound keen and positive).
I would be grateful if you could consider my application and look forward to hearing from you in due course.
Yours faithfully
Write the letter For the Attention of x and the company addresss that way you can address it Dear Sirs.
I used to get interviews and jobs using this type of letter (no need now as I work for myself).
Good Luck0 -
Thank you very very much! Of course I wasn't going to put "desperate"!! If only we could just write - 'please please please I really need this job and I'd be so good at it!!' hee hee
Thanks though - I just needed an idea of what was necessary to write; I didn't realise it could be so brief. I adapted your email and the application and CV have gone off.

Though your CV or a completed application form should provide all the information the recruiter needs to decide whether to interview you -
a paragraph about how you meet the fundamental requirements of the person spec can be valuable as a summary - to get them to read on and know what what you are pointing out to them as their evidence to add you to the short list.0 -
I wish you luck.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"0

If there is a person spec attached, make sure you list examples of how you meet it, thats always worked for me. I hate writing cover letters though, I find them quite hard.
Best of luck!0
