Recommended Alliance & Leicester Bank Account - Warning

I must the only one that has no problem moved from Halifax to A&L.
I can log in tonight and see what DD's are coming out tomorrow (and cancel any I don't agree with). I always know what my balance is, as it the running one (which takes all debt cards into account), can order a new card, pin, cheque book all on line.
No problems
Never had to phone them mind u0 -
Alliance & Leicester must have the worst Onlin banking system in the world as it does not work in real time and even cash transactions can take up to 3 days before they are shown on your account. Even more annoying is your available balance takes into account DDs that are goling out the next day which then causes panic because you think you may have insufficient funds. Quite often our account will show 3 different balances which make it hard to manage your account properly.0

Exactly the issue we are currently having, making things really really hard for us at the moment, as is their practise of IMMEDIATELY taking charges out then sending a letter in the post which arrives up to two weeks later.0 -
 I swapped my work account (I'm self-employed) over to A&L. I'm just doing my accouts for 2007/2008 and logged in to access my online statements for the period. I can only access back to Dec 2007 which is a bit rubbish but need the statements so looked up the 'copy statements' option. Before I knew it I had been charged £5 for a copy of my latest statement (it does say that but I thought there would be more options/confirmation before the charge was applied). I emailed their cust service to ask that the charge and statement be stopped to be told that it was not possible as the process is automated (the email was quite rude). I asked them to justify the £5 charge for 1 piece of A4 paper and a 2nd class stamp (given that I need April 07 to Nov 07) and was told that they don't have to justify the charges; they only have to make them clear to the customer who can either accept them or not take the action. Putting aside the £5 I have already incurred in error, I am now facing £40 in charges for maybe 10 pieces of A4, sent 2nd class and produced automatically. Outrageous. I will be closing my 3 A&L accounts but will simply have to stomach the charge for the copies or I will never get them.
sorry to hear your bad news. I have my main account with 1st direct and they are grand. The people on the phone are always nice and helpful. they have a regular savings account paying 5%. The only thing wrong is standing orders. If I make a mistake with a standing order it can't be seen until it's been paid so they can't cancel it. Obviously this can cause trouble. Also they pay out standing orders NOT exactly on the day they say.0
