I prefer her previous boyfriend by the sound of things. Why on earth would you care if her ex. has paid for a licence key for her XP on her laptop? You might as well flush £55 down the toilet for all the difference buying a genuine licence key is going to make to her life.
Are you going to inspect her MP3s and movies and go out and buy them as well. And why not check her clothing for fakes. Of course don't forget unofficial parts on her car.
I am detecting hostility towards the ex-boyfriend.

I applaude your desire to get a 'legal' version of XP, I would do exactly the same...with movies/cd's/clothes etc...

I thought there was some kinda scheme MS ran where you could get a cheaper upgrade from an illegal copy...Am I imagining that?0

Because her computer isn't working properly any more and I want to help her do a reinstall and she doesn't have the discs.
Thanks for the relationship advice though. No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30 -
Strictly speaking buying oem versions of operating systems is illigal unless acompanied by some form of hardware essential to the operation of the computer.
Likewise to the person who sold you a reclaimed license he too was strictly speaking breaking the terms of the license as microsoft state that a oem license lives and dies with the machine it is supplied with. If you downgrade a new pc with vista you may use a legal license oem or otherwise of a compatible OS.
To be totally above board you need to buy a retail box version of windows or go to the windows update site, see if it fails the genuine validation if so then you should be directed to a way of making your copy legal.0 -

just buy an OEM copy from flabay should be the cheapest and a nice middle path between legit and illegal as long as its an unused licence I'm sure Microshaft would rather you do that than download a licence they get absolutely no cash for. Or find a friend who works for MS as they used to get upto 5 full retail copies of any MS product for only £10 to £20 per copy. Thats how I got my XP pro and Office 2003 etc for way way below retail.0
