I'm saving on my fuel bill_ if you have a car which tells you your mpg as you drive

Seems to be working!

So your wee tip is in order to get more miles to the gallon, you should drive so the display says you're getting more miles to the gallon?
I may be being unduly harsh, but that doesn't sound like rocket science to me...0 -
I think he/she is saying freewheel and use engine braking.. but yeah, the display part is plain obvious.. :undecided
I drive a Range Rover.. I get 30MPG on a good day! :laugh:BSC Member 155

I know it's obvoius but I being thick didn't think of it until recently! not rocket science I know but sometimes you can't see the woods for the trees.

About a 10% saving then.
Sure guard against looking at the mpg meter too much, but the one on my car tells you something about what's going on when your driving that your not otherwise aware of.
For example: on the flat and up hills you can be pressing the accelerator more than you need to to maintain speed, but not enough to actually accelerate and therefore needlessly using fuel. Sometimes cruise control can be better here as the computer is working out how much fuel to deliver.
Watch out though, you could be spending more time in a lower gear than necessary just to keep the peak fuel consumption below a certain point which ends up with more fuel used. I find getting into the highest gear reasonably quickly is better than languishing in a low gear for too long.
I can also put my foot down and have some fun on a twisty road from time to time without it making any measurable difference to fuel consumption;)
Overall I've scraped another 2 to 3mpg (out of 48mpg) with driving technique and knowing the route better (minimise braking etc.) but I don't let these efforts distract me from the road ahead or prevent me from enjoying my driving too.0 -

I have an instantaniuos MPG readout and I have tried various strategies for improving MPG. The only two things I have found to work are:
1) Drive slower
2) Try to avoid pressing the brake by anticipating the road conditions0 -

I am very impressed, how do you do it? I can only get average now about 68mpg out of my Citroen C3 1.4 Hdi. Looking forwards to consistently breaking the 70mpg barrier.0
