Thanks for your advice anyway. Do you know if i need to pay council tax as an access student?

You can get a student exemption if:

the course consists of 21hrs per week or more of study, tuition or a combination of the above,
    and
the course lasts at least 24 weeks of one academic year.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Im not sure.. Access course are run differently all over the place, somehow I have just finished mine...
For me I have 5 kids and my kids were only in childcare on the 2 days a week I was at college. Im not sure where I found the time but to do essays but I did!
OMG!! And here's me worrying about one sensible, mature 13yo daughter!!
What kind of hrs are you looking at for the course, how many days a week?
I was hoping to work 20-25 hours pw and fit attendance at college around that, then sqeeze in home study the rest of the time.
Good luck in whatever you do.
Your plan to work 20-25 hrs sounds good., my course was 2 days 9-3ish and DH who starts access in sep will be doing 9.30-3. Two days plus one morning his is an art access course, where as mine was social policy.
I found that I did homework mostly over the weekend when dh was around and not every weekend, when I had an essay due in there were a lot of rude words said by me and some tears at times as I did find it over whelming sometimes. But then I can get over whelmed at the washing pile ( when its 7 peoples washing not been put away for 2 weeks!) the final projects I did were quite hard as they required a LOT of work but I still managed to do it all, I was never late with anything, despite the worry I caused myself.

They say that after the first term of Access you will be on a level similar to a first year degree. It can hard but you really don't see it at the time, you just do the work. You will be amazed at how you change as a person and grow over the time. Remember you will not be the only one, Access if full of people that are all there for the same reason with a multitude of gremlins, based on their education and life experiences. You will find people from all walks of life including rich, poor sick clever and not so clever, ist about you achieving your full potential.

One thing tho, dont start Access not knowing why you are there, the people on my course that did not have a clue were the ones that dropped out or were not committed, of course I knew about 8 yrs ago why I wanted to go so I was very focused which made it a lot easier for me.

Who knows next yr you might make it to Portsmouth Uni and I will be there to say hi!!!!
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!

I would say once you have finished the access course it is a natural step up to level 4 (1st year at uni).

I agree completely. How could a course which takes people with (often) lowish GCSEs get them up to degree level in 1 term? As Alwaysonthego says, a degree should be a natural progression from the end of an Access course.

I guess my tutors must be wrong and I will find out soon enough for myself:eek::D

I had heard this myself, loads of times while doing access, but I promise you it's not true. In access they pretty much spoonfeed you what to put in assignments but in uni they give you brief guidelines and thats your lot!

The pressure is also on because at my uni you are allowed 2 attempts at each assignment, if you fail both you are off the course! A third attempt is allowed if you have a very good reason to have failed, but even if you then pass it's not taken for granted that you are to carry on, depends on the circumstances. Not sure if it's the same everywhere.

Don't let this put you off, I LOVE uni, think I appreciate it more cos I'm a mature student:j
