Kennel cough vaccine

Our new dog will be going into kennels while we are on holiday, she will be in kennels down the road where we will be staying so we can collect her each day. We didn't want her to think we had abandoned her hence being in kennels near us. The cottage we are renting this year is no pets. Anyway she was in kennels for three weeks before we adopted her last week, they have had kennel cough their. Our dog was vaccinated in october 2007 for kennel cough does anyone know whether or not she will need another vaccine prior to her kennel visit in August she is up to date with her yearly vaccines. thanks

    Hi Rev,

If she was last vaccinated in October 2007 then it doesn't need to be done until October 2008. It only needs to be done once a year :D

Parainfluenza is given yearly(as a jag) and WONT vaccinate against kennell cough You also need to vaccinate against Bordatella,( which is given via a spray up the nose) this needs to be done around every 6 months and at LEAST 5 days before kennelling

This depend on the brand of vaccine. Intrac has only a 6 month duration whilst Nobivac KC, Canigen KC and Bronchshield all have 12 months.

Please, you are getting confused here. Nobivac is a vaccine to lepto which is given YEARLY as routine to all dogs. If you want to vaccinate against Kennel cough its a separate issue and is a vaccine which is squirted up the nose and will last around six months. If your dog HASN'T had a vaccine squirted up his nose then hes NOT vaccinated against kennel cough.

Remember to vaccinate early enough as it take five days for the immunity to kick in

Nobivac is just a trademark, they make different vaccines, for example Nobivac DHPPi, Nobivac Lepto 2, Nobivac KC.

The Nobivac KC vaccine is for kennel cough, and it is an annual vaccination schedule. There is a data sheet here
    http://www.intervet.co.uk/Products_Public/Nobivac_KC/090_Product_Datasheet.asp

"Onset of immunity against Bordetella bronchiseptica has been demonstrated 72 hours after vaccination, and against canine parainfluenza virus three weeks after vaccination.
    Duration of immunity: 1 year."

It's still squirted up the nose though.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I agree with pboae. Our gang have recently had Nobivac KC; it lasts for a year, had to be given at least 72 hours prior to them being kennelled and it was indeed squirted up their noses. :)

The Nobivac range of vaccines made by Intervet is currently the most commonly used small animal vaccine brand in the UK. They manufacture a variety of vaccines for cats, dogs, rabbits and others. All current Kennel Cough vaccines are given intra-nasally and are separate to the standard core injectable vaccinations (ie Distemper, Parvo, Infectious Hepatitis, Parainfluenza & Leptospirosis). There are many bacteria and viruses that cause KC including parainfluenza but the KC vaccines also include vaccination against Bordatella bronchisepticum, a particularly contagious bacteria.
All KC vaccines except Intrac (still widely used but only 6 months at present) give 12 months protection but if it doesn't say Nobivac KC, Canigen KC, Intrac or Bronchshield on your dog's vaccine card, he/she has not had a KC vaccine.
Can't speak for the others (and it is too late for me to be bothered to look it up) but Nobivac KC (as said by fleago and pboae) has a 72 hour onset. Saying that, I like to vaccinate 2 weeks before a dog goes into kennels to allow time for a solid immunity to develop. For people who know their dog will go into kennels, we advise that the KC vaccine is given at the same time as the booster. The timings coincide and we offer a £14.50 discount to do the KC and booster at the same time.

As for the OP, a Nobivac KC vaccine given Oct07 will be valid until Oct 08 (12 months)
