Car hire for over-80s??

My in-laws (both 82) want to come and stay with us for a few days over the summer. As they live at the other end of the country, they'll come here by train, but when they get here want to be able to go off and do their own thing rather than rely on us.

All the car hire companies I've looked at seem to stop hiring when you're 70ish. Does anyone know of a company that hires to older people (clean licences) at a reasonable rate?

We're in South Cumbria - thanks for any advice!

Avis has no upper age limit. Not sure about any others though.

My mother who isn't 80 yet and still thinks she is Jackie Stewart was stopped by the rozzers for eratic driving the other night, the kids won't get in the car with her if they can avoid it.

My FIL who is well over 80 is just a total liability.

Are you sure this is a good idea? The trouble is at that age they see nthing wrong with their driving and everyone else is in the wrong and tend to leave a trail of destruction in their wake. But I suppose the advantage is it will give you some peace and quiet...:).

    Good luck
