Digi cam - which of these two is best?

I'm after a new digi cam and have narrowed down to these two:

Panasonic Lumix TZ5
Olympus SP550 UZ

The Olympus is half price at boots, so they are very similar price wise.

Picture quality is important as is the zoom (the Olympus having an 18x optical). Reading reviews the TZ5 appears to be better, but the 18x zoom does appeal.

Any views anyone?

Very different sorts of cameras so it's hard to compare them. The Sony is a 'bridge' camera, i.e. it's an SLR-like compact, the TZ5 is a compact. A better comparison would be the Panazonic FZ18.

BTW you can now get 560 UZ and a 570 UZ, presumably why the 550 is cheap.

BTW I have a TZ3 and am very happy with it for what it is.

I'd check out the reviews on https://www.dpreview.com and then decide. But choosing between those two is a bit like saying shall I get a Fiesta or a Galaxy, they're both cars but designed to do different jobs.

Thanks. I have looked into the pair of them and agree they are of different types. Either type is fine with me!! I'm favouring the Lumix, but the 18x zoom really appeals on the Olympus.

I'm kind of torn and the offer from Boots looks good. I haven't seen the Olympus, but have seen the Lumix. The Lumix looks and feels excellent for sure.
