Job Seekers Allowance for Recent Grad

Options
Hi,

This is my first post on here, but I was just thinking about this;

I have just finished University and will graduate on the 17th July, but already have a job lined up for September. Before this I have about 10 weeks off and was basically wondering if you could apply for Job Seekers Allowance during that time?

Cheers,
Richard

  • Yes. If you have finished your full time course, you can apply for JSA. You can also apply for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit if applicable as well.

    No, I'm fairly sure you can't apply for JSA if you have a job lined up. You may be able to apply for housing benefit etc though.

    Would hardly be fair to claim JSA as you're not seeking a job are you?

    I doubt you'd be able to get it as obviously you aren't looking for a job and that is what it is intended for, but I thought I'd point out to anyone else reading this post that if you have just finished your degree it is possible to claim it. I went to the job centre earlier as I wasn't sure if they would have a rule that would prevent people who are just about to graduate from claiming but there isn't!
