question about spam stuff

I know I am probably being VERY dim, but all these messages which are spam (namely the free petrol ones) why to they do it? do they get money frompeople just looking at the message or what?
Just wanted a bit of an insight to this

As in Spam on this board? They will draw in the fragile or gullible, take personal details from them (including, but not necessarily CC information), then max out the cards, apply for loans, or plain old sell the details to another company.

Or just receive a small payment from someone who clicks their link.

The website you end up on will know the link you clicked, they will then pay the spammer for bringing people to the website.

Each person he brings to the site earns a small amount, but if you can get lots of people clicking the link (by making it look like a good offer and post it on popular websites) the money can soon add up.

So don't click the links as you will be earning the spammer money

They have a motif obviously for doing it. Besides being scum of the Earth there motifs are

1. Clicking on the link and they get some small payment
2. Trying to trick you to get personnel information for defrauding you (bank details etc)

Either way this parasite deserves to have his spam shoved just way the sun dont shine, and IF I was able to catch them I would be more than willing to do it for free
