Google says that this might be the problem, and it walks you though a solution. Messing with the device manager can be pretty heavy stuff, though this doesn't sound too bad. I'll admit I'm not an iPod expert (boycotting iPod, in fact), but from the perspective of the iPod as a USB device, this sounds like the proper solution to me.

Why are you boycotting iPods just out of interest?

Non replaceable batteries. With decent care the battery should be the first thing to go in an MP3 player, so I'll not buy a player that won't allow the user to replace it, without having to pay through the nose, or buy a new player.

More here on the short iPod battery life, here is a suitably irritated rant with some interesting facts. I'll accept that Li ion batteries degrade, that's a flaw in the technology, I'll not accept that Apple case in this flawed technology so it can't be easily replaced by the user, when other (arguably better) companies like creative offer removable and replaceable batteries.

I see, very interesting. My 2 year old iPod still has a great battery life, but I have heard some have had problems with them.

Apple have never been know for liking end users tinkering with their stuff. You can replace them yourself though if you know what you're doing.
