Best Life Insurance for 23 year old

Hello All, I'm a new poster and I'm hoping someone can help as I am somewhat naive about these matters. I'm currently covered by my work pension scheme - life insurance wise - but I am giving up work shortly to look after my child so will not be covered then. Can anyone help me with what I should be looking for? I am a smoker (attempting to give up) but I know this affects the monthly cost. What sort of life insurance/assurance (I'm not even too sure of the difference) would you recommend or is it very much dependent on what sort of cover I feel I need/want? Many thanks if anyone can shed some light on this for me!!
